Here we slept -and-fed about seventy people. The chapel has been carefully refurnished since but had not been furnish- ed with a lectern. Through the activity of Dr. Ingram a contribution was taken with this object in view and a sum sufficient for tho purchase of lectern in E»ghund was secured.
The service was held at noon, A programme appropriate to the occasion was prepared by the Rev. F. L. Norris, chaplain at the Legation. The adress of presentation was made by the United States Minister, the Hon. E. H.. Cenger. He referred feelingly to the difference bo- tween the upperranes of the chapel now and its appearance during the hot uncom- fortable days in the summier nonths of 1900. Peking was the point of observation The British for the eyes of all mankind. Leration was thrown open inost beei who had to those hospitably driven out of their own homes, and all worked harmoniously for the coinmon protection, By the grace of Almighty Gol, we were mercifully preserved and this leet rn is a fitting rçinembrance of gratitude. Mr. Cockburn, in the absence of his a fit- superiors in the Legation, made ting reply, with one or two touches of quiet humour. He did not for the evidences of *domesticity' which were so apparent in 1900. He suggested that if the Americans
future date were driven at some
to
find rofuge in the chapel of the British Legation they would be, as it were, under the gis of their own. national emblem. He gave high praise to the Americans for their organising ability and help which they rendered during the siege. He accopted the present in the nabo of the Legation and hoped the beautiful lectern would long remain, not only for its proper utility in religious service, but also as at evidence of the friendly relations which grow up mider such disadvantageous circumstaveus.

AMOY NOTES.
(From a Correspondent.)
AMOY, June 6,
A LONG COUNTRY TOUR IN FUKIEN Travelling in Chips, especially in the Souch, is not as comfortable as in some parts of the world. No wheeled vehicle is
obtainable for the roads are too narrow and too bad for any kind of carriage or cart. We cannot even utilize the patent wheelbarrow that is in vogue in the North and in Contral China. Apart from various kinds of boats in usa on the rivers and streams, the only mode of conveyance on the roads is the sedan or mountain chaïr.
As I have recently returned from a 1 ng journey of 780 miles in the South-Western' districts of the Fukien Province, covering a few lines regarding my experi- 69 days, ences may not be without interost to others whether travellers or not, I left in March in cold wet weather, and I returned at the end of May in hot sultry suminor, and it zined more or less all the time. I never had four consecutive fine days; there were very few days indeed on which rain did not fall. It has been the wettest spring season I rememberin 10 years. As the rainfall for the par three years or so has been much under the average, the amount of rain that has fallen will go a long way to bring things up to their normal level. furmers are naturally very pleased, and are looking forward to a good rice harvest to make up for their losses last year and the year before.

Owing to the heavy rains, the atreams and rivers overflowed with water, and many a waterf-11 glistened like a silvery streak down the mountain side, sparkling and foaming in the bright sun- shine, a thing of beauty and a joy for ever. I should like seriously to commend this country to any travellors from other bunds, who seek frosh ground to investigate, or if they are willing to overcome certain inevitable discomforts due to the bad roads and ifferent accommodation, they will be amply rewarded by many a striking panorama of varied and entrancing beauty, well worth a visit. Every time I go through the district I enjoy it better, and as this time I wout to many new places, I onjoyed the double delight of new beautics as well

I may perhaps be pardoned for mention ing incidentally that the expense is not henry. It is sufficient to recall the history of the giant octopi which not many years ago were ranked with the sea-serpent as fabu- lous.
Among land animals, not withstanding their greater ease of dis covery, we have the very recent case of the okapi, the ruminant of the size of a horse. a near relative of the fossil Helladotherium, which, inhabiting the most remote regions of Cent al Africa, remained completely un. known to naturalists until the first years of ho twentieth century. Must wo be sur prised then, if the vast oceans yet conceal ittle-known monsters, which floo before our ships, appearing only rarely and then to persons who have too alight a knowledge of zoology to observe them properly?
To return to the sea-serpent, M. Oude mans's opinion regarding its nature is us follows
'In the first place, it is not a serpent, nor even a reptile, but a mammal, belonging probably to the order of Pinnipede, which Its general form is that includes the seals, of the Plesiosauri of prebistorio seas, but with a much longer tai, which takes up half the total lengh of the body. The neck is also very long, bearing a relatively small head, with short snout, and truncated like that of a sais. The body is spindle-shaped and furnished with two pairs of flippers like those of other pinnipeds. This elongated form and long flexible tail, which is the chief organ of propulsion, together with the appearnce of the thin, long neck, have contributed to give the creature the aspect of a serpent when it swims on the surface, showing only a small part of its back, the rest of its body being hidden under water * In short, this animal must be to land animals.
