In all the rest of the world the aggregate of vessela under construction, omitting warships, in ́the early part of the year was about 720,000 tone, so that we are still not only the largest shipbuilders, but we do more work ában all the rest of the world combined. Not only are we the greatest builders, but we are also the greatest users. of the quarter we were building for our- wolves and our Colonies 795,000 tons of shipping, against the 720,000 tons the rest of the world was building for itself, and we were also building 181,0 0 tous for foroiga or unknown' owners. If we built as slowly us some foreign nations, these figures would appear still more striking, for then we should have more tonnage under construc- fion at a given time. As a basis of com- parison, it may be mentioned that in September, 191, the highest figures were reached, and that at time they were 439,000 tons in excess of those of the last quarter.

A STYGIAN STORY,

י

In the realms beyond the Styx,

There was once almost a riot,

And the facts are coming out,"

Though they kept them pretty quiet.

Jonah crustily declared

Noah never was a sailor;

Noah mentioned, with a wink, Jonah's record as a whaler.

Caesar giggled then about.

Alexander and the riddle; Then he chuckled moro and asked

Noro if he wouldn't fiddle.

Shakespeare, too, was angered when Colley Cibber ssed the Bacon,

P Helen's hobby was the way

They told how old Troy was taken.

Cleopatra fled in rango

When they asked about the adder; And they taunted Romeo'

When he couldn't climb a ladder.

Things were getting warm; it scomed

Everyone was sure to catch it. When George Washington appeared,

Brandishing his little hatchet.

Gentlemen,' he cried, have peace! Ladies, think of your position; We shall be forgotten if

We smash everyone's tradition.'

Tamar,

Have You÷Rheumatism? F you hit your thumb with a baminer, If you hit your thum a lot of medicine co

ease it? Not on your life. You would wrap it up with some soothing, healing remedy like Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and let nature do the rest. There is no moro sense in swallowing a lot of medicine for Rheumatism than there is for a bruised thumb. What you want to do is to rub your Rheumatism with Chamberlain's Fain Balm vory night and morning. Rub it well in, and let nature do the rest, and between Pain Balm and nature you will be cured. One application gives relief.

Impurities IN THE BLOOD. We have seen hosts of letters from people who have received great benefit from the use of Clarke's Blood Murture. It cannot be too highly estimated, for it cleanses and clears the blood from all im panties. This is a good testimonial from the Family Doctor, which goes on further to say · It is the finest Blood Purifier that solence and skill have brought to light, and we can with the utmost confidence recommend it to oui subperie burg and the public generally, Tor Scrofula,

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet

inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Tamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to

the heiglit given in the table.
