Within a few hours of the departure. of the first German steamer of 20,000 tons on her maiden voyage to New York the first 20,000-ton ateamer built in America was successfully launched. The United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States all therefore have 20,000-ton steamers. to build them was taken by young. company, and they were the first vessels to be, built. The builders had But even secured ground for their building yard when they signed the contract. But, having signed it, work was it once begun. Land was secured at a point where vessels could at onco be launched into deep water, The necessary machinery was set up, at length the first ship is launchel. On this side of the Atlantic the class of vessel to which the Ultic and the Cedric belong seems likely to increase rapidly in the near future. Lloyd's Register shows that six steamers between 10,000 and 12,000 tons were under construction in the shipyards of the United Kingdom at the end of

five over 12,000 and under 15,000.arch,

four over 15,000 tons, so that the list of

these ocemur giants is rapidly i increasing, and as all those, great streniners are cargo carriers rather than ocean racers, they must displaco a very large number of vessels of inferior tonnage when they begin to run. SUNDRY NAVAL AND VICTUALLING | Ten years ago there were only two steamers

They pulveriso, as it were, the warser part of our na ture, and nothing survives the process but what deserves to endure. And what are you?" asked Lord Chief Justice of England of a witness who had just given some rambling and discre- ditable ovidonco.. I employ myself as a surgeon,' said the witness. Bat does anybody else em- ploy you as a surgeon? Are you a surgeon i asked the judge. And theraat: the witness collapsed.

It is claimed for allmedicines that they effect cares, though the fact is that some do and some do not. Mother Seigel's Curative Syrop has been very extensively used for thirty-five years, and is to-day the principal domestic medicine iu sixteen different count ies. The number of cares it has⚫ffected (especially among persons suffer. ing from indigestion and bilious diseases) is quito incalculable. Of the many thousands of testi- monials as to its efficacy voluntarily given, here is an interesting one from a mother and daughter. For several years, writes Mrs. Hutchison, of Nowrasile Road, Jesmond, N.S.W., on October 19th, 1502. *I suffered agonies from indigestion and liver complaint. I could neither cat, sleep, nor work-in fact did not know what it was to enjoy a single hour of free om from pain. I was attended by two of the cleverest medical meu in the Newcastle district, but their treatment failed! to bring me any relief. Indeed, I went steadily downhill, and began to fear that my case was beyond the aid of medicine. I grew weakly aud thin, and became dejected, when, two years ago, I was advised to try what Mother Seigel's Cur- ative Syrup could do for me. It was a happy decision, for before I had taken a quarter of the first bottle my health was much improved. I continued to take the medicine according to the directions for five weeks, by the end of which

time I was onred. The cure is evidently a per-

manent one, for I bave remained well and sound to the present day.'

Intending visitors are advised to secure their rooms either by wire, or lotter, so that they can be reserved.

This is good testimony-testimony to be proud cf. But it don't stop here. Mother Seigel's Curativo Syrup not only cured Mrs. Hutchison of her indigestion and liver complaint, but, in the case of her daughter Agnes, arrested the pro- grees of an insidious aud dangerous nalady which, if allowed to range unchecked, might have had fatal resul's. Here is Mrs. Hutchison's own description of her daughter's case: My daugh- ter, she says. was in a very bail way. was suffering from severe nervous debility. She wasted away to a skeleton, and appeared to have no blood in her body. She was so weakly that she could not walk without assistance, and was often compelled to keep to bed for days together. The doctors seemed to be much in the dark as to her adment, and as impotent in treating her 718 casa as they had been in their treatment of mine, so I determined to experiment on ber with the medicine which had proved such a boon to my- salf. The result was that within two months a few bottles of Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup changed her from a helpless invalid into a beirty, healthy, happy girl. She remains as well as one could wish her to ba'

DECORATION DAY.

Next Saturday, May 30th, is what is known in the United States as Decoration Day, a day of annual commemoration of the fallen soldiers and sailors who fought for the preservation of the Union in the war against sccession. The observance is by processions to the graves of the fallen, which are decorated with flowers. Usually there are public meetings with prayer and an oration. In the Southern States the slain Coufederates are cominemorated simi- Jarly, but at a date carlier in the season.' I give these facts because it is proposed to celebrate the day here next Saturday, when the graves of Americans in the foreign cemetery will be decorated. Some sailors and the officers from the Callao will attend and a salute will be fired.
