The House of Commons has passed without division a resolution guaranteeing the Transvand loan of thirty five millions, of which the bulk will be devoted to the development of the country, including the acquisition and construction of railroads, irgation, land settlement, and the conver sion of the old Transvaal debt.
Mr Chamberlain, in introducing his ro- solution in the House of Commons guaran. teeing the Transvaal loan of thirty-five millions, said the great security for the future peace of South Africa consisted in the development of its prosperity, and as regards the Transvaal unless the State was ready to act as the beneficent landlord there would be no prospect of good results with. in a reasonable time. He regarded the loan merely as an insta’ment in expendituro for developing the Transval and he hoped
it would rise to hundreds of millions, but that did not concern the House. He paid a high tribute to Lord Milner's services to his country which he said had been so un generous as not to congratulate him on the inarvellous results ho bad achieved.
May 7. In the House of Commons Sir Henry Campbell Bannerman said ho though the account Mr Chamberlain had given of the origin of the transaction which eu'minated in the lown resolution should 379 | convince the country. that the interest of this country had been well regarded by him.

The N. W. Frontier. Simla, May, 1-General Egerton's des Darweshkhel Waziris is published in the patch on the late operations against the
Gazette with a covering letter in which
Lord Kitchener pinces on record his appreciation of the good work done by General Egerton and the officers and the punitive force. men comprising the various columns of General Egerton's despatch describes the operations and refers appreciatively to the endurance displayed by the regular troops and to the keenness of the nor hern Waziristan and Kurram Militia and the Samians Rifles. General Egerton mentions for special gallantry displayed at Gumatti Captain Davies, of the 3rd Sikhs, who led the storming party which eventually cap- tured the fort and Lieutenant C. M. Browne, E., who led a party which endeavoured to breach the wall with gun- cotton, crossing three times the ground
between the tower and the troops at the
imminent risk of his own life. Other officers mentioned are Captain Swanston, 18th Bengal Lancers, and Colonel Bookey, L.M.S, while Mr Donald and his Political staff Aro thanked for their ready co-operation and advice.

Mr Justice Bucknill, in giving judgment, said the Burgermanister Petersen was & sister ship of the August Korff, and aftor she came ap the master of the latter might have been very disagreeable to the Snowflake. But with the spirit which prevailed among sailors, the master of the Defendant vessel said, No, she has got hold of me; let her do her work. You can come behind and look out in case of need.' Both he and the Elder Brothern thought that a very nice trait on the part of the master of the salved ship. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER.
It is remarkable how greatly our estimate of -ourselves and our qualities differs from the esti- mate formed of us by others. If the thing were practicable, many folks would realise heavily by selling themselves at their own valuation (if they could find customers), and afterwards buy- ing themselves back on the basis of other people's notion of their worth. The more numerous and the harder the blows aimed at our self-conceit in the days of our youth, the better for us. They pulverise, as it were, the worser part of our pa- tare, and nothing survives the process but what deserves to endure. And what are you?' asked Lord Chief Justice of England of a witness who had just given some rambling and discre- ditable ovidence. I employ myself as a surgeon,' said the witness. But does anybody else on- ploy you as a surgeon? Are you a surgeon! asked the judge. And thereat the witness collapsed.
It is claimed for all medicines that they effect cures, thongb the fact is that some do end some do not. Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup has been very extensively used for thirty-five years, and is to-day the principal domestic medicine in sixteen different count ies. The number of cures it has effected (especially among persons suffer- ing from indigestion and bilions discases) is quite incalculable. Of the many thousands of testi- monisks as to its eflicscy voluntarily given, here is nu interesting one from a mother and daughter. For several years,' writes Mrs. Hutchison, of Nowrastle Road, Jesmond. N.S.W., on October 19th, 1902. I suffered agonies frou indigestion aud liver complaint. I could neither eat, sleep, uor work-in fact did not know what it was to enjoy a single hour of freg om from pain, I was attended by two of the cleverest medical meu in the Newcastle district, but their treatment failed to bring me any relief. Indeod. I went steadily downhill, and began to fear that my case was beyond the aid of medicine. I grew weakly and thin, and became dejected, wheu, two years ago, I was advised to try what other Seigel's Cur- ative Syrup could do for me. It was a happy decision, for beforà I had taken a quarter of the first bottle my health was mach improved. 1 ontinued to take the medicine according to the directions for five weeks, by the end of which time I was cured. The oure is evidently a per- manant one, for I have remained well and sound to the present day.' -
This is good testimony-testimony to be proud of. But it don't stop hare. Mother Seigel's Caralive Syrup not only cured Mra. Hutchison of har indigestion and liver complaint, but, in the case of her daughter Agnes, arrested the pro- gress of an insidious and dangerous malady which, if allowed to rango unchecked, might have had fatal results. Here is Mrs. Hutchison's own description of her daughter's case: My dough- ter,' she says. was in a very bad way. Ble was suffering from severa nervons dobility. She wasted away to a skeleton, and appeared to have no blood in her body. She was so weakly that alie could not walk without assistauce, and was ofter dompelled to keep to bed for days together. The doctors seemed to be much in the dark as to her ailment, and as impotent in treating her ease as they had been in their treatment of mine, so I determined to experiment qu her with the medicine which had proved such a boou to my- self. The result was that within two months a for bottles of Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup changed her from a helpless invalid into a hearty, healthy, happy girl. She remning as well as one 'could wish nor to be?
Mrs. Hutchison is well-known in Jesmond and Lambton, and has lived in these places, for twenty years. She is a native of Scotland, and came to Australia in 1872.

His Lordship directed the prisoner to be asked if he had anything to urgo why sentence should not be passed upon him?
The Prisoner replied that he did not do it; he had nothing more to say.
lis Lordship, addressing the prisoner, said he had been found guilty of the mur- der of Young Kui Wan. If, when he said that he did not commit the murder, he mount that it was not by his hand that this man met his death then his statement was true. The charge against him was not that he himself did the deceased to death, but that he was one of a gang of four men who went to his house for the purpose of killing him, and did kill him. The evid. ence was that the prisoner, with Chan Lum Tsai and two others, wont to deceased's house, that he remained with another man outside to watch, that Lam Taai shot the deceased. The evidence also was that for some considerable time previous to that he had been ondeavouring to get persons to assist him to either caprure and take back to Cunton the man who Was killed, or, being unable to effect his capture, to assist him in killing the inan. Tho-penalty imposed by the law of this country upon persuna who committed wilful and deliberate murder was death, and prisoner had been found guilty of murder. It was his Lordship's duty now to pronounce the sentence of death upon him. The sentence of the Court thereforo was that he be taken from hence to the place from whence he came and from thence on a day to be hereafter fixed to the place of execution and that there he be hanged by the neck until he be doad, and that thereafter his body be buried in such a place as the Governor may direct, and may the Lord have mercy on his soul,

At the meeting of the Sanitary Board yesterday afternoon Mr Hewett put a ques tion to the President (Dr Atkinson) which produced an explanation about the recent meeting of property owners, and also an expression of regret that a slight error should have caused such misunderstanding. Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an so- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during
the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
