The London County Council. owns 72 miles of line, 48 miles of which, situated on the north side of the Thames, is at present worked by the North Metropolitan Tramways Com. pany, while the 24 miles on the south side of the Thames, purchased in January, 1899, is worked by the Council. itself. So without considering for the moment the railways and tramways outside the County of London, we have in round. numbers 343 miles of lines, over which 700 millions, or more than half the total number of London passengers, must annually pass.. The omnibuses, slow and clumsy as they seem when compared with electric traction, carry more passengers than either of the two other systems of London b.cmotiou.

The facts in the case of Mr Gaskell, who be. longs to Hongkong, were exactly similar, He was outward bound, had cunsigned his luggage for Plymouth, per Messrs Pick- ford, and the trunk, which was missed after its arrival at City-Road Basin, contained much personal luggage, and a banker's draft, open, for £500. The trunk was traced the day after its loss to Williams' place, and was recovered, minus some of its contents.

The bankers' draft was safe. The Accused made no denial of the charges, and it was said that nine pawntickets, all for trousers pawned the day of their arrest, were the contents of another parcel lost from Pickford'a.—The owners had not come forward, and to enable them to do so "the Prisoners were formally remanded.

HE TIMES,' after three years of laborious effort, and with the aid of the best qualified writers of England, Europe and the United States has completed the supprimuntilor, audes which, with tac 24 volumes of the Ninth Edition, will worst but the Tenth Edition. No other Tenth Edition will ever be published.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica is the only book in which will be found the latest figures, the newest fact, the most recent discoveries of science, the most accurate maps, and which deals fully with every phase of contemporary life, political, industrial, geographical, literary, sociological, artistic.

A GREAT UNDERTAKING,

The task of the editors has not been an easy one. The decisivo circumstances which affected the work of bringing the Enoy- clopedia Britannica up to date were peculiar. What form was the Tenth Edition to assumo? The idea that the Tenth Edition should 2427 be an entirely new work, that should take up the history of the world from the beginning again, had only to suggest itself to be dismissed. Advance have been made, and events have occurred which are not to be found in the existing twenty-four volumes of the Ninth Edition; but the advances have not been of so revolutionary a character as to diminish the value of the matter contained in the twenty-four volumes-so far as it goes, nor do new events affect the record of the past, if that record is brilliant and authoritative as are the contributions to those twenty-four unrivalled volumes. The production of a now edition of a work of reference is often an occasion, not merely for making additions of new matter, but also for improving the matter that is already in existence. In this case although there was very much to add, there was nothing to improve. Only an unreasonable love of innova tion for innovation's sake could have recommended the plan of producing a Tenth Edition afresh from the beginning, an edition which should not only contain the new knowledge for which the times call, but also cover again the ground already so admirably covered in the existing twenty-four volumes.

The history of England, for example, broke off with the accession of Queen Victoria, and here, very obviously an addition was needed; but there would have been no possible excuse for re-writing the history of England up to the death of William 1V., since that history had been written by Professor Freeman and Professor Rawson Gardiner, and it may well be doubted whether any two- or twenty-historians to-day could contribute so fine a treatise upon the subject. No shadow of a reason could have been found to justify the re-writing of that article, and the purchaser of the Tenth Edition would have had no reason to be grateful to the new- Editors had they decided upon such a course.

THE PAST-THE PRESENT.

It was What was true of Engish history was true of all other histoy, was true of biography, literature, philosophy, and the arts. true also of the fundamental principles of scienco which have governed the later advances, and without which the new discoveries and devices would remain unintelligible. The lines of modern biological science could not be laid down better than they were by Huxley, Romanes, and the other eminent men of science whose contributions went to give the twenty-four volumes their lasting place in the world's literature. Not even in a branch of science that has seen such great advances as electricity were the contributious of such authorities as Professor Chrystal, or Dr John Hopkinson, become valueless-what they lacked could be added.

It was, then, a foregone conclusion that the recent history and now knowledge, which so urgently called for another edition of the national work of reference, should be added in the shape of new volumes, and the form which the Tenth Edition thus In all encyclopaedias which have hitherto appeared the past has SAIR AT KELLY & WALSH, Iơn, necessarily assumes, possessos certain distinct advantages of its own.

outweighed the present. A work of reference which undertook the gigantic task of describing in full all the histories and all the presonalities of all the countries in the world since the beginning, naturally relaxed its hold when it came to the present. Biographies of living men were excluded from its pages, and contemporary history was but lightly touched upon, and so it happened that the anted-information concernin his own time. In the production of the inquirer sometimes looked in vain for the information he most Tenth Edition there was no temptation to retain such a conservative attitude. extent which would scarcely have been possible under other conditions.

The Editors of the new undertaking had to face one difficulty, however. An encyclopedia in two parts, ong dealing with the past and the other with the present, would not be easy of reference. This single drawback has been triumphantly removed by the construction of such an index as will make the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica more easy of reference than any provious edition has ever been. How precisely this index will direct the inquirer to the desired item of information on any, page of any of the thirty-five volumes, inay be judged from the statement that it contains as many as 601,000 references,

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basi at sim

Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet

3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
