shots, with slightly increased energy, due, no doubt, to weight. This shot was directed to the centre of the plate, and the projectile went right through the plate and, the backing behind. There can be no doubt as to the enormous power of propul- sion maintained by the shot after impact; the diameter of the hole made in the plate. was only in, more than the shot itself. and there was absolutely no crack in the plate. A piece of the plate, moreover, was driven right through the b-cking and the skin-plate beyond the backing of the arm- our-plate, and was picked up 38 ft. in the rear. The shot was completely broken up. The fourth and fifth shots were again so called armour piercing, but without exps and again they were broken to piecra. The plate still stod woll up against the st tack, the extent of penetration being only 14 in. After this pretty severe trial, it was, continues Engineering, decided to attack the plate with the 7.5-4. gun, firing an armour-piercing shelf fitted with a Johnson cap as mudo by the Vickers Company. Such an attack upon a plate of 7in., follow- ing on five shots, as a severe punishment. The plate showed not a single crack, which is proof of the satisfactory manufacture but at the same time it was made obvious that Krupp armour, even of the very best quality, cannot withstand attack from a capped shell. Tt was therefore evident that evon with this striking energy of #1340 foot-tons it would be possible for un explosive shell to find its way through 7-in. armour into the interior of the ship, and there to do very serious damage. The 7.6-in. gun has on other official tests developed a muzzle velocity of 2920 ft. per second, and an energy of 11,800 foot-tons, almost double that on the occasion of the attack against this armour; so that, with superior propelling; powder, it is possible to conceive that the degree of penetration on this occasion could be attained at very considerable ranges. In any case, the trial establishes the efficiency of the Johnson cap against the very best of armour. Ad an indication of the quality of i

THE NEW ENTERPRISE
IN CHINA
OF
"The Times"
(LONDON)
THE 10TH EDITION OF THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA OFFERED IN CHINA
AT LONDON PRICES.
Agents, Messrs KELLY AND WALSH, LIMITED,
HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI,
Full or on the plan of monthly payments). HE TIMES (Londen) has begun the distribution in China of the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannia (for cash in An allotment for this country, limited to 125 copies for Shanghai and bf copies for Hongkong, has arrived at Hongkong and subscriptions are now being registered.!
In order that the distribution of the work may be completed quickly, The Times' offers a concession to those who simalt sub- scribe viz.--the right to purchase the work at the London price, sea-freight and landing charges paid as far as Shanghai or Flongkong. This great concession has never before been allowed by The Times to subscribers in the Bar Bast.
Although the Encyclopedia Britannica has been sold by The Times' in Great Britain, in India, in Australia, in South Africa, in Canada and the United States, in Burua, Ceylon and the Straits, it is heretofore been found impossible to offer the work directly to the subscribers in China owing to the extraordinary demand for it elsewhere, and the great distance of this country from the source of supply.
AN EXPENDITURE OF £100,000.
The work now offered is the authentic A. & C. Black edition (with the supplement especially prepared by The Times') and not the mutilated, unauthorised pirated' edition. It has been printed from the original plates, and with the addition of the supplement- ary articles, it is the only reference book in which will be found the latest figures, the newest facts, the recent discoveries of science, the most accurate maps, and dealing fully and authoritatively with every phase of contemporary life, political, industrial, geographical, sociological, literary, artistic, Biographies of living men and women are, for the first time, included. In the perfecting of the new volumes the sum of £100,000 has been spent.
THE BOOK AND ITS BUYERS.
Readers of this newspaper aro already familiar with the general character of the Encyclopaedia, its high literary excellonicu, ity sound scholarship, the authority of its contributors, and are cognizant of the fact that of the Ninth Edition more than 44,000 copies have been sold in Great Britain and the British Colonies during the last three years. The demand for it has been such, indeed, the print-
ing presses in Edinburgh and the binderies in London have been working day and night for months at a time. Throughout the British Empire, not only in its most populous, but even in the most remote sections, the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britan- nica has been distributed. It is not unreasonable to say that to no other work of its kind has there been accorded so wido a public endorsement, none has ever received from its purchasers so many testimonials to its practical usefulness and educational value, nono can approach it in comprehensiveness, or in exhaustive and masterly treatment of subjects.
When The Times' reprinted the work, and offered it to its subscribers at half the regular publishers' price, the event made a great sensation in the publishing world of London. Both press and public at once welcomed the project as a splenilid stroke of newspaper enterprise. Its success was instantaneous. More than 3,000 complete sets were sold in less than a fortnight, and within a twelvemonth the astonishing number of 20,000 orders has been registered at The Times' office in Printing House Square.
So remarkable a success, in the case of so large a work, proves that for the English speaking peoples, all over the world,' am The Times' reviewer has well said, there is no book of reference that can be compered to it.'
The 24 volumes of the Ninth Edition, together with the New Volumes (of whichi nine deal with encyclopedic subjects, the tenth with maps, and the eleventh of which is a great Index), constituto the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopædia Britamics, and no other Tenth Edition will ever be published. The Now Volumes are already in the hands of subscribers in England, and although they were finally completed only two months ago, a first impression of more than 30,000 copies was required to fill the orde
To residents of China who already possess the authentic A. &C. Black Ninth Edition, the Now Volumes will be epplied at prices 40 per cent. less than those hereafter to prevail. Prices of the New Volumes may be obtained on application to Kelly & Walsh, Ed., together with a 170 page Illustrated Prospectus of Specimen pages.

Each set of 35 volumes is packed fua tiulined case, and delivery will be made in the order in which bscriptions shall be received. A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. IMPERIAL BANK OF
Thisis theage of research and experiment, when all nature.eoto speak, is ransacked by the scientific for the comfort and happiness of man. Scieucelas indeed made giant strides during the past cer ary, and among Üle-by no means icast important-- discoveries in medicine comes that of Therapion, particulars of which will be found in another columu. This preparation is unquestionably one of the most genuine and reliable Patent Medicines everintroduced, and has, we understand; been used in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the well-known Chassaignac, and indeed by all those who are regarded as authorities in such matters, including the celebrated Lallemand, and Roux, by whom it was some time since uniformly adopted, and that it is worthy thenttention of those whorequiresuch a remedy we think there is no doubt. From the time of Aristotle downwards, a potent agent in the removal of these diseases has (like the famed phi losopher's stone) been the object of search of some hopeful, generous minds; and far beyond the mere power- such could ever have been discovered-of transmuting the baser metals into gold is surely thediscovery of a remedy so potent as to replenish the failing energies of the comfirmed red in the one case, and in the other so effectually, speedily and safely to expel from the system without the aid, or even the knowledge, of a second party, the polsons of acquired or inherited disease inall their protean forms as to leave no taint or trace behind. Such is The New French Remedy Therapion, which may certainly rank with, if not take precedence of, many of the discoveries of our day, about which no little ostentation and noise have been made, and theextensive and ever-increasing demand that has been created for this medicine wherever intro- anced appears to prove that it is destined to cast into oblivion all those questionable remedies that were formerly the sole reliance of medical meu. Therapion may be obtained in England, direct from the proprietor, and of the principal Chemists and Merchants throughout the Colonies, India, China, Japan, &c., not even excluding such remote districts as Central Africa, the Fiji Islands, St. Helena,&c.-DiamondFields Advertiser KIMBERLEY Sold by A.
