In all boldness, for nobody dares to oppose it, Russia considers that it is no longer worth the trouble of conceal- ing the purely military character of the railway. Only when the powerlessness of Great Britain, whose powerful position in the Far East is being shattered more and more by Russin's advance, and by the rapid growth of Germany's trade, was sufficiently recognised, did Russia lot the military aims of the railway appeur un- concealed; these aims are so clear and unmistakeable that nobody who gets to know Manchuria from travelling along its Russian railway, can doubt any longer as to the ultimate aims of Russia's policy in. OF

"The Times"

(LONDON)

THE 10TH EDITION OF THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA OFFERED IN CHINA

AT LONDON PRICES.

Agents, Messrs KELLY AND WALSH, LIMITED,

HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI,

THE TIMES (London) has begun the distribution in China of the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (for cash in THE

full or on the plan of monthly payments). An allotment for this country, limited to 125 copies for Shanghai and 50 copies. for Hongkong, has arrived at Hongkong and subscriptions are now being registered.

In order that the distribution of the work may be completed quickly, The Times' offers a concession to those who shall sub- scribe viz.-the right to purchase the work at the London price, sea-freight and landing charges paid as far as Shanghai er Hongkong. This great concession has never before been allowed by The Times to subscribers in the Far East.

Although the Encyclopædia Britannica has been sold by The Times' in Great Britain. in ludis, in Australia, in South Africa, in Canada and the United States, in Burma, Ceylon and the Straits, it is heretofore been found impossible to offer the work directly to the subscribers in China owing to the extraordinary demand for it elsewhere, and the great distance of this country from the source of supply.

AN EXPENDITURE OF £100,000.

The work now offered is the authentic A. & C. Black edition (with the supplement especially prepared by The Times') and not 628 the mutilated, unauthorised pirated' edition. It has been printed from the original plates, and with the addition of the supplement ary articles, it is the only reference book in which will be found the latest figures, the newest facts, the recent discoveries of science, the most accurate maps, and dealing fully and authoritatively with every phase of contemporary life, political, industrial, geographical, sociological, literary, artistic. Biographies of living men and women are, for the first time, included. In the perfecting of the new volumes the sum of £100,000 has been spent.

THE BOOK AND ITS BUYERS.

Readers of this newspaper are already familiar with the general character of the Encyclopedia, its high literary oxcellozco, its sound scholarship, the authority of its contributors, and are cognizant of the fact that of the Ninth Edition more than 41,000 copies have The demand for it has been such, indeed, the print- been sold in Great Britain and the British Colonies during the last three years,

ing presses in Edinburgh and the binderies in London have been working day and night for months at a time. Throughout the British Empire, not only in its most populous, but oven in the most remote sections, the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britan nica has been distributed. It is not unreasonable to say that to no other work of its kind has there been accorded so wide a public endorsement, none has ever received from its purchasers so many testimonials to its practical usefulness and educational value, none can-approach it in comprehensiveness, or in exhaustive and masterly treatment of subjects.

When The Times' reprinted the work, and offered it to its subscribers at half the regular publishers' price, the ovent made a great sensation in the publishing world of London. Both press and public at once welcomed the project an a splendid stroke of newspaper enterprise. Its success was instantaneous. More than 3,000 complete sets were sold in less than a fortnight, and within a twelvennath the astonishing number of 20,000 orders has been registered at The Times' office in Printing House Square.

So remarkable a success, in the case of so Jarge a work, proves that 'for the English speaking peoples, all over the world,' as The Times' reviewer has well said, there is no book of reference that can be compared to it.'

The 24 volumes of the Ninth Edition, together with the New Volumes (of which nine deal with encyclopedic sukjects, the tenth with maps, and the eleventh of which is a great Index), constitute the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, and un other Tenth Edition will ever be published. The Now Volumes are already in the hands of subscribers in England, and although they 49% were finally completed only two months ago, a first impression of more than 30,000 copies was required to fill the vide,

Mr Phillips contend- ed that the statement made by the plaintiff while in the box was false, and then proceeded to deal with the statement that money was being sent down to Manila to enable the branch firm to bid for U S. No security was required by the American Commercial Company, and no evidence was forthcom- ing to show that the money was required for deposit in Manila. The defence said this is a fraud. The box was taken by somebody, and the probability was that an impression of the key was taken while the ship was in dry dock. In the course of concluding remarks, Me Phillips his said he had nover, in the course of his experience, met any Counsel who could advance untenable points of law - he would not say with assurance but with such apparent sincerity as his friend Mr Slade. On the point of law, His Lordship hnd said that the onus of proof that this box contained this money lay upon the plaintiff, and so he did not propose to deal with the point. If Mr Slade dealt with it,

Have you seen the box since it was first put on the shelf by the Chinaman in the strong room?—No, sir; I simply saw it put there.

Archibald Henderson, chief engineer of the Zafiro, stated that the vessel went into dock on the 11th July, 1902, and came out of dock on 15th August. He gave formal evidence of the appearance of the China- men who went on board with the box. While the ship was in dock, anyone hud access to all parts of the vessel.

This concluded the oral evidence, and Mr Phillips put in the evidence of Mr Henry G. Sharp taken on commission in Manila.

It was agreed, however, that all the evidence taken on commission should be put before the jury.

Cheng Yut Po was then called by Mr Slyle. He stated: I am an assistant to Messrs Bismarck and Co., ship chandlers. Our firm has been compradores to the Ger- man naval ships for seven or eight years. Mr Slade, in replying, dealt first of all with the question of law. He submitted that the receipt and non-delivery of this box having been admitted and it having been proved the mate's receipt and bill of lading having been proved, and freight paid on that declared value, in law the defondants were bound to pay the declared value unless they could prove fraud.

His Lordship--And what do you rely upon ?

Mr Slade said he was submitting his propositions first and would develope his arguments afterwards. He submitted that whenever a shipper wished to go behind falsify receipt or bill or lading,

the party wishing

to go behind the documents must prove that the facts in the bill of lading "rere wrong. He proceeded to quote from Lord Halsbury's judgment page 75 1896 Appoal Cases, Smith v. Bedoin S S. Co. He then referred to Carvers. Section 79. He sub- mitted there had been no case where the question of onns was before the Court which contradicted the statement of the caso as given in Carver.

His Lordship - Where you see in a bill of lading weight, value, and contents unknown,' the bill of lading is not evidence against a master that he did receive that money.

Mr Slade continued to argue

that when the bill of lading was disputed the onus of proof was upon the shipowners. Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to

the height given in the table.
