hour in the latter's endeavours to put into practice the above policy. It would not be à difficult task for China to maintain tho gold standard once it had been adopted by her. The reasons are, first. that the amount of gold produced in China is not small; secondly, that in her trade with silver countries the of imports exceeds that of exports, while in trade with gold countries, the rest facilities for ntracting guid exports exceed the imports, thus giving her own market; and thirdly that if the money brought home by the Chinese emi grants from abroad be in the form of gold, the yellow metaal thus transmitted to China foreign countries will reach an enormous sum.
As to the procedure of practically adopt. ing the gold standard, the following steps should be taken by the Chinese authorities:- (1) Gold coins shou'd be made legal

But sailing up the North Branch of the Dragon River is an experience full of pleasure. Amoy is situated in the Estuary of the Dragon River, and the North Branch is the longest of the three main streams that flow into this Estuary. After leaving the plains, the course of the river winds between wooded hills, with hero and there an open strand, or small plain, where en- ough houses can be built to form a village, and enough ground to farm the rice or to grow fruit trees. Not that the Chinese are content to utilize level places only: they terrace the hills as high up as they can,--

King Edward in Portugal. April 4,—King Edward and King. Curios had a pleasure excursion to Cintra, visiting the palaces of Cintra and Pons. In the evening they returned to Lisbon.
King Edward received the diplomats and an address from the Cortes alluding, in the warmest terms, to the alliance which had been maintained for five centuries,
Replying to the latter King Edward said that he arcepted the address as a renewed affirmation of the alliance. He continued:
I have seen once more the famous lines of the Torres Vedras, where Britain and Portugal fought as allies. Fortunately, things are changed, and both now enjoyed the friendliest relations with their former foe. That alliance, since renewed and confirmed could only tend to the peaceful development of their respective countries and colonies.' He was much impressed, he said, with the heartiness of Thursday's welcome.
There were fireworks let off on the Tagus. In the evening the city was illuminated.
The streets were impassable.
The Near Eastern Squabble. There is much comment on the inspired articles in the Novoe Vremya emphasising Rursia's pacific arms in the Balkans and charging the French Government with encouraging the Slavs with false hope, that Russia is secretly disposed to intervene, and disputing the right of France to claim the protectorate over the Balkan Slave.
