THE NEW RIFLE AND EQUIP. MENT.

Inspection by the King, According to the Military Mail:- Every branch of the Service is to be supplied, with the new universal pattern rifle. The exact design of this weapon has been finally approved, and a sealed pat- torn is in the War office. So far as the breech mechanism is concerned there is no change, except that the now rifle cartridges are loaded in a clip, exactly the same as the Boer Mauser, only the clip is oxydised instead of bright. The now rifle equals the existing type as regarda velocity, tra jectory and penetration, but the back sight is worked on the principle of the sighting of the Maxim gun.

Possibly the greatest difference is in

SPECIAL CARE TAKEN TO GIVE SATISFAC-weight; the new rifle weighs exactly eight

CHRISTIANITY AND MAHOMEDANISM.

A Mahomedan writes to the Times-I was painfully impressed, as a Mahomedan, by the extravagant and alsolutely untrue statements of Lord Rosebery concert ing

horrence of Christianity.'

Mus-ulmán ab-

I should have thought, in the first place, that the mere fact of Great Britain being the largest Mahomedan Power in the world would have pre- vented an English statesman of Lord Rosebery's calibre from indulging in

such unseemly, if not wholly mischievous,

observations.

Secondly, it is incredible that an ex- British Premier should be so ignorant of the true spirit of Islam as to entertain such vulgar opinions with regard to its tenets,

The following doclaration of Mahomed should edify his lordship on the point at issue :-

In time of peace and in a state of hostility no Christian shall be hated or disdained on account of his being re- sident among them [Mahomedans]; and whoever shall thus treat a Christian shall be accounted unjust, obstinate towards the Apostle of God, and dis- obedient to His will.' 'If the Christians," continued Mahomed, ' should become in want of assistance for repairing their | churches or hermitages or anything concerning their religion, the Mabomed- ans are to support and favour them.'

In conclusion, I wish to add that it is to be hoped that the narrow-minded utterances of Lord Rosebery-utterances hardly worthy of a schoolboy in this age of general enlightenment--would be received with as much disapprobation by his immediate followers, and all broad-minded Englishmen in general, as they would undoubtedly be in the entire Islamic world.

A correspondent asks whether, under the new Building and Health Ordinances, a floor can be taken up without a permit or certificate being obtained. We learn that boards of a floor can be taken up in a householder's tenement, when it becomes necessary to get at white ants or a defunct rat. It does not seem clear that the boards can be replaced without some formal com-made the application. munication with the building Authorities. Perhaps time will throw more light upon this knotty point. This is not a Gilber tian idea: it is one raised solemnly by the working of the new Ordinances.

On Sunday Inst the Club race was sail- ed, The wind was extremely variable

both as the start and finish, the wind was west and light, with northerly puffs coming off the Kowloon shore, while in Hunghom Bay and beyond there was a gentle to mode- rate breeze which varied from NE. to SE.

In the first class Vernon got the beat of the start from Dione, and had soon tablished a nice lead. Alannah, did not cross the line for a full 5 minutes after the other two, being late in getting over from her mooring, and soon gare up the race, When Vernon and Dione were off the, Dock Point they met a nice hrocze which gradual- ly changed from NE. to SE. Vernon was ahead when they met the wind, but instead of keeping between Dione and the Channel Rocks, which was the first mark, took a cast to the N. and let Dione go off by herself to the S. The consequence was that the change in the wind set Dione up and onabled her to close the gap between them to a fow lengths, and Vernon only rounded the Rocks some 25 seconds nhead. On the run to the Cust Rock Buoy, Dione, keeping in Vernon's wind, drew up on her, got an overlap to windward just before the Buoy was reached, and Fernon not luffing
