TO PREVENT CROUP, EGIN in time, The first symptom is
Bureness, this is soon followed by a
peculiar rough cough, which is easily recog- nized and will never be forgotten by one who has head it. The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse. If Cham- berlain's Cough Remedy is freely given, all tondency to croup will soon disappear. Even after the croupy cough has developed, it will prevent the attack. There is no danger in given this remedy as it contains nothing injurious, It always cures and eures quickly. For sale by All Dealers: WATKINS Ltd., General Agents,

The Chairns said :-Gentlemen, the Report and Statement of Accounts, now submitted, I propose, if you will permit me, to take as read. It is a matter of regret to the General Managers and the Consulting Committee that the promise of a year ago in respect to the 1901 account has not been realized, but unfortunately heavy losses were subsequently sustained, notably in this Colony, Amoy and Colombo; the total claims paid amounting since the commencement of 1952 to no less than $135,000. We have not been alone in this unfortunato experience, but this does not lessen our disappointment. The net ro- sult is a balance available for divi. sion of $199,315.46, and I trust that the appropriation of this sum in the manner suggested in the Report will commend itself to you, (hear, hear). The addition of approximately 10 per cent. of the year's profits to Reserve will increase that Fund to $1,154,891.96, a substantial amount, it is true, but one which you will, I am sure, agree with ine that it is desirable to take every opportunity of adding to that the 1902 account account. Turning to
the balance that will observe you at credit on 31st December last $299,299.15 or about $34,000 less than the 1901 account at 1 correspond. ing period, but I should explain that the former line been already charged with its proportion of the serious losses which I have already referred to as having fallen partly upon 1901, and although further losses have been sustained during the current year I may be allowed to ex press the hope that we may be fortunate not to have a repetition of our last year's experience, and that the final result of the account may allow of a larger divid. end than it is now proposed to pay. I should add that the customary valuation of properties mortgaged to the Company have been made and that in every case there is ample margin on the sums advanc ed. You are aware that fire insurance rates in Hongkong have recently been increas- ed by 20 per cent. This has been done under instructions issued by the Fire Offices' Committee (to which our Company is affiliated) upon the grounds that the water supply of the Colony is inadequate and the Fire Extinguishing Appli- ances insuficient. I do not, myself, consider that such an increase, applied indiscriminately, is called for by existing local conditions, and the representations which have been made will, it is to be hoped, induce reconsideration of the ques tion (hear, hear). Already a considerable amount of business has been lost, owing to the increase, many large property owners preferring to carry risks, themselves, rather than pay the higher rates demanded, and it seems obvious that arbitrary action which leads to such a result cannot be beneficial to Fire Insurance Companies, in the long run (hear, hoar). Before moving the adop tion of the report and accounts I shall be pleased to answer any questions regarding them any shareholder may desire to put. There being no questions, the Chairman moved the adoption of the accounts, which motion Mr Arnold seconded.
It was agreed to.

'Mrs Dane's Defence
A LONDON LETTER.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
LONDON, January 30.
THE CHINA MAIL.
The christening of the infant son of the Prince and Princess of Wales was unaccompanied by any public festivities, and the rejoicings were purely of a per sonal character. The baptism took place in the private chapel of Windsor Castle, which was decorated with white flowers and palms from the famed gardens of Frogmore. Round the pedestal of the golden font flowers were also wreathed, and a cross of white chrysanthemums hung over the altar. The King was in Court dress, and the Queen, who was dressed in pale grey, took the child from Lady Eva Dugdale, Lady-in-Waiting to the Princess of Wales, and handed him to the Bishop of Oxford. From a little gold abell, the Bishop poured water on the fore head of the babe, but 'George Edward Alexander Edmund,' as he has been named, distinctly disapproved of such behaviour, and efficiently proved his lung power, much to the distress of his little brother, who was a witness of the ceremony. The King laughed at the incident, whereupon a small Prince in the Gallery caused much amusement by calling out to his grandfather I see

Mrs Dane's Defence' is quite the bent thing the Brough Company has done this season. In construction and development, it is thoroughly characteristic of Henry Arthur Jones. Its moral is a severe one, and sympathy goes out to the central figure of the play, but the enforcement of the moral is the only true ending, since our social system could not hold together if deception and lying were tolerated. Mrs Dane did not realise the tangled web she had begun to weave when first sho practised to deceive, and though she meets kind friends in Lady you.' The Princess of Wales looked Eastnoy, Sir Daniel Cartoret and others quite well, and was gowned in pale there is no escaping the wages of her own blue. The new Prince was clothed in sin, as must every sinner; in the long run. The speech in which Mr Brough enforces the beautiful gown of honiton lace in this doctrine, in the long and trying aceno which all the children of Queen Victoria, with Mrs Dane in the third act, was one of the finest pieces of stage elocution ever including King Edward, were christen- heard in Hongkong. We do not recall any ed. more successful part of Mr Brough's, unless it be in Sowing the Wind.' Sir Daniel Carteres fitted him liko a glove. His touches of real pathos in the scenes with his adopted son and Mrs Dane brought to Lunatic Asylum, which resulted in the the surface the tender side of the lawyer's loss of 51 lives, has sent a thrill of character, not wholly cynical or devoid of the finer feelings despite the early searing horror throughout the country, anl of his youthful affection, while his love probably no other catastrophe during making with Lady Eastney was mark- ed by that artistic restraint which dis the last quarter of a century has tinguishes the true artist from the witnessed so many heartrending scenes, inere actor. THE FREIGHT MARKET.
In their Freight Circular dated Saturday, 28th February, Messrs Lamke and Rogge write:-
Bomo
Coast freights look better than when last reporting on the 13th inst. The enquiry, then referred to as having sprung up after tonnage to lead at Wahu for Can- ton developed into a strong demand for prompt loading at rapidly rising rates, and, whilst orders have to extent been filled up North, there has been a fair share secured locally of tonnage otherwise generally employed in southern trades. This has had the effect of raising froights fairly allround. The fact that fientain and Newchwang also will require tonnage in the immediate future tends to strengthen owners' hands.
The demand from Wuhu is still con- tinuing. Fixtures effected vary as much in respect of chartering conditions, des- patch etc. as they do in rates, from 21 to 27 equivalent in local currency, the higher candareens per picul has been done, or figure boing closing rate.

Scarcity of tonnage has since caused shippers to pay 18 cents for a sinal local boat for early March, Saigon to Philippines has a charter for voyages at 30 cents, April delivery. For prompt, 33 and 35 conts has since been paid.
Saigon to Japan, end of February, a French boat closed at 29/31 cents, 1 or 2 ports; being several cents under current rates. Same destination, April loading, business has been done at Saigon at 40/42 cents.
Bangkok requirements are for the present supplied by liners, and, concerning the new crop, reports are by no means cheerful, estimates make it only about one half of last year's yield.
Of the number of miscellaneous local charters reported during the fortnight a fixture to the Philippines from Rangoon, (52 cents per picul), denotes a new de-
