Mt Chamberlain replied that the Government was working night and day and spending inilllons to restore the country for which they had hitherto, received not a word of thanks. If people persisted in a policy of grumbling and insatiability he would despair of conciliation and would advise the Government to stay its hand.
General De Wet replied that co-operation was impossible while his brothers and General Christian Botha represented the people; the country would not consent to bo ruled by them. He would not rest until he had caused a rebellion, not armed but one of agitation and discontent, against. the Government.
Mr Chamberlain replied that England was prepared to carry our the poach remus, but would not forget her friends.
It was wrong to suppose that those who bad assister the Goverment would be subjected to any other selection.
