based on a gold standard, the bill for that purposo would be abandoned.
There has been a considerable change of sentiment in Congress in regard to the passage of a coinage law for the Philippines. It is now belloved that the House will accept the Senate bill with some few modifi- cations. Such an attitude has boen in- timated by several ... prominent Senators. This change of base is principally due to the efforts of the Administration, which, at the instance of the Philippine government, has beon making every effort to secure some definite action before Congress adjourns. The bill will go to conference in a few days. Washington, February 12.-The Pre sident and administration profess great disappointment at the failure of congress to pass a bill extending the gold standard in some form to the Philippines. It hoped that such a inea- had been sure would have become a law before this, and doubt that there will be any Currency legislation at all this season is now being freely expressed. It is feared that if congress adjourns without providing currency relief for the Philippines there will be further trouble in the archipelago.
[The above cable is not of especial import And the friends of sound money for the Philippines have little yen on to fear from it that the situation in Washington has taken an unfavourable turn. The question will in all probability be loft as it is now until close upon the adjournment of con greas, when some form of legislation will be cnncted.]

LIFE'S HAPPIEST PERIOD.
ร
When
ou ancient Greek philosopher was asked which be considered was the happiest time in a man's life he promptly selected the period between the ages of forty and forty-five On being pressed for the reasons which induced him to make this selection, the philosopher added: At forty a man, if he be intelligent, has lost his illusions, and looks upon the world as it is, not as he would like it to be. He is still young cough to partake of the pleasures of youth, yet hus suffleient experience never to permit his heart to rule bis head; is moderato in all things, and wisely shy of hazardous enterprise. On being further asked which he couidered the happiest time in a woman's life, the philosopher pansed a long while, and when at last he replied he prefaced his nuswor by asserting liat this was the more difficult question of the two. Finally lie suid: • When she is too old to be called a girl, and not old enough to be called a womad without the word "young" prefixed to it. I am unable to be more definite, for the differences among worney pre greater than the differences among men. The healthy young woman sees only the brightest side of life, and to her vision the fature is filled with golden possibilities of which the mental anticipation is delightful.
In this prononneement it, will be noted that the wise old Greek uses the word 'healthy' in a qualifying sense, Omit that word and the sentence at ouce loses more than half its truth. Here is a case which will prove our statement. From the age of nineteen until I completed my twenty-third year, I did not know what it was to be well for a single day, writes Mrs R. Huntley, of 65, Ultimo Road, Ultimo, Sydney, N.S.W., under date 19th June, 1902. But for Mother Seigel's Corativo Syrup it is doubt- ful if I should be here to-day to describe my experiences. My ailment was clironic biliousness and dyspepsia. Words are inadequate to convey a conception of my sufferings during that viiserable period. I was then a tailor's machinist, employed in that copacity by Mesars. Godferson
Smith, of the Royal Arcade, Sydney. Ordinary food was poison to me, and I was obliged to exist on soda-water, milk, plaiu biscuits, and dry toast. Even that fare would sometimes distress me to an intolerable degree My skin turned sallor, my eyes sank and were surrounded by dark, hollow circles. I slept only by fit and starts, my slumbers being haunted and harassed by hortible dreams and nightmares. There was a dull continuous pain between my shoulders and in my right side. I grew thinner, until I was reduced to mero skin and boue, and became so weak that I could hardly walk to my place of business. Often the noise of my sewing-machine, and the close air of the workroom, would ring on a splitting headache that maddened wa. - Then there were fits of retching ane vomiting, which troubled me with great frequency. When there was nothing in the stomach to come up, I would retch and strain until became exhausted and faint, when my workmates would improvise a couch for me with their cloaks and jackets, and I would lie for hours unable to move. I was treated by ihren doctors; but I believe the medicines they prescribed irritated my stomach and did me more harm than good. After four years of misery I was persuaded to try what Mother Seigel's Carative Syrup could do for me, and within a few days began to mend at such at rate that eve yone who knew me was amazed at the improvement in my condition. The vomiting ceased, the huo of health returned to my cheeks, my eyes brightened, and at the end of two months I was in every respect thoroughly

WHAT SHALL I DO WITH IT?
can one do with annual surplus of, way £25? It won't buy a house, a Stockbroker would not look at it. Now Twenty Five Pounds invested in the
SANDARD LIFE OFFICE may represent £1,000, more or less, pay- able to the assured at Sixty Years of age, should he livo so long, or upon his death should be not, and a thousand pounds is a Lot of money when looked at from the standpoint of a paltry £25!!
