Jan. 6-Lord Castletown approves of the proposal of the Dublin Daily In- dependent that a non-political conference
should be hall to promote the material development of Ireland,
Jun. 7.-It is estimated that if the pro- posals submitted by Lord Dunraven's con- forence for the settlement of the land question in Ireland are carried out they will involve the "taté in an absolute grant of £50,000,000,
Jan. 8. The Irish Landlord's Conven- tion, reserving the right to offer certain criticisms, has approved of the conference held under the presidency of Lord Dun- raven, and reports that the scheme drawn up by the convention for the settlement of the land question is worthy of the Govern ment's serious consideration in connection with other recommendations which have been made.
Mr T. Healy, M.P. (Nationalist) trusts that the Government, the landlords, and the conservatives will recoguise the modemtion of the landlords' convention, and that it will be wise to clinch the bargain by legis lation.

Jan. 8. It is stated in official circles in Paris that in the event of Russia that pro- testing against the claim of Great Britain that her warships should be allowed to enter the Dardanelles, M. Delanse, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, will support France's "ally (Russia), according as le clauses of the Dual Alliance cover the Contingency,
It is further reported that France con- siders he observance of treaties such as those relating to the Dardanelles subservi ent to the interest of the Allies, and that there is nothing to compel intervention to secure their observance.
It is expected that. Italy and Austria will support Great Britain in regard to the Darda- nelles, and that Franga will remain neutral. Much indignation has been expressed in NEW FELT HATS, BRACES, TIES, SOCKS, Great Britain at Germany's refusal to

I am content that others should be there And breathe that scented title-laden air, Nor much regret if others' oyes behold The show procession's' sinuous lengths un-
fold;
Lot others-six months after-bond the
knee
In superannuated loyalty
'And sit in long uncomfortable rows
While certain great ones specchify-or
doze ;
Intrigue for invitations to the ball And when they go be squeezed against the
Wall
Or-spite of all intrigues-not go at all; Or be beholden to an A.D.C.
To scramble at a thronged Vicoregal tea; Bo smothered in some fashionable crush. Or wither 'neath the insolence of plush. And, Phyllis, do not grieve to stay away, Think of the dire expense of the display, You know our antiquated bamboo cart Would be considered to the reverse of smart, A Dykes's carriage and a spanking pair Would leave the family cupboard somewhat
bare;
I know that you would want a Paris
gown,
▲ sealskin and a dozen hats from Town ▲ gharry costs a ransom so I hear,
And everything is most absurdly dear: You've seen the prices in the Pioneer. Champagne they tell me is the only wine And wo would have to ask such crowds to

And think what all your lady friends
would say
If our ménage were lacking in display,
And their condolence would be hard to bear
If we were not invited here and there
Have you been asked to Lady C-n's

FOR NURSING ZEAL.
For zeal and devation in providing for and nursing sick and wounded during the trouble at Tiéntain, Mrs Crowlio was pre- sented with the Royal Red Cross by His Excellency Sir Henry A. His Excellency, in making the presenta tion, said Mrs Crowlie, I have asked for your presence to-day that I may have the great pleasure of handing to you the de- -coration richly earned by you during the most trying experiences of the siege of Tientsin in 1900. The collection is a fine piece of work, and many readers who saw the bulk of these Proverbs for the first time twonty years ago in the pages of the Chinese Re- corder will, we think, be glad to have this revised edition of the book. A famous lexicographer was, if we mistake not, subjected to the like calumnious charge, by which it was sought to turnish his fair fame. The quo- tations, pointed and pat, adduced in his dictionary as evidence or illustrations, were said to be concocted or cooked, an aspersion which argued nescience in certain of his readers.
The following report will be presented to the Shareholders at the sixth ordinary 'general meeting, to be held at the office of the company, No. 13, Beaconsfield Arcade, Hongkong, on Tuesday, the 27th inst., at
noon :-
GENTLEMEN, The Directors have now to submit to you their report on the work ing of the Company and a Statement of Account for the year onded 31st Decem- ber, 1902.
The work done during the past year on the Concession has been considerable, de- taile of which are given in the appended Annual Reprt hy Mr Thomas Lester, the Company's Mining Manager, and it may be interesting to add that subsequent letters received from him are of a distinctly hopeful tone, as to futuro results.
Financially, for the period under review, the increase in the debit balance has ben only $36,597.12, as against $79,050.15 in the last report.
