TOMACH MAKES THE MAN.

A competent stomach means vigour, vitality, health. for by digestion alone can food be transformed into blood, brain, muscle, wasted tissues repaired, decay arrested and life sus tained. Imperfect digestión iludigestion upsets the whole economy of life. It makes good food poison, breads dolts, laggards, hobbling rheumatics, nerve racking pains. Segel's Syrup ensures digestion, dispels disease, produces health. Backed by 34 years' un- broken success in 16 countries.

Mr Kadoorie, on behalf of my countrymen, I must avail nyself of this pportunity of thanking you, from the bottom of my heart, for the generosity and good will which you have shown, in taking the initiative, in the task of promoting Western education amongst the Chinese. Until quite recently Hongkong has been the only pince, in the immediate neighbourhood of China, where English education was within the reach of the Chinese. My countrymen have long felt the want of proper English schools in their midst, wherefrom their sons

There have been numerous changes in the 1. Political Contact; 2 Commercial Con-

Educational Contact,-by means provising teachers for the Society's schools of literature and schools; 4. Moral and in Canton and Honam. The Examination was held by me on the 18th December and following days and in considering the re sulte, it should be remembered that every pupil was examined, irrespective of the number of attendances he had made. Particular attention had been devoted, throughout the year, to pronunciation, and the few failures in this subject were Boys who had but recently entered. The translation from English to Chinese was good, but that from Chinese to English was only fair. Throughout the Classes the re- sults in this subject were excellent. With the exception of Class 3, the grammar papers were neatly and correctly worked. The analysis of Class In. calls for special men- tion. Last year the results in this subject wore decidedly disappointing, but a mark fed improvement has taken place, and in [inly two of the classes was the pass below 30 per cent. The papers in Classes In and 1b were remarkably good, but 20 per cent. of the papers in Class 2 were poor. Allapathy, which the classes did well this subject, but Classes 3 and 4 dus-rve special mention, Arangements have been made to place the College under the Governm nt Grant-in- il Scheme from the beginning of next. Session, and plans for the much-needed ex ension of the existing premises are in course of preparation.

There have been an unusual number of changes in the foreign community here recently. Mr Geo D. Fearon, who was for thirty years a resident, left recently with his family to go first to Honolulu, then to the States, and afterwards to England? He will be missed in many ways, being not only a prominent and successful business man, but for a num-

ber of years a very wise member of the Municipal Council, and active also in church work. Many, both Chinesa and foreigners, sincerely regret his de. arture. Next to follow Mr Fearon was the Rev. William Bridio. In his case, Canten's loss is Hongkong's gain. Mr Bridie's special work was educational. Everything in that line was of interest to him. Ten years ago, when he took over that department of the work of the Wesleyan Mission, there were only seven students. During 1902, 13 pupils passed through his classes, 75 seniors and 28 juniors. The Anglo-Chinese School, with 50 pupils, was self-supporting. After paying rent, teacher's salary, etc. there was a balance of $90 in hand. The total amount of fees collected during 1902 was $555.

Mr Bridie has introduced a new and original system of teaching English, and though he has worked blthetto with his M.S. only, results have been very encourag ing. The American Baptist Press here is now getting out his Lessons in book form. The reverend gentlemen is to be con- gratulated upon the work that he has done.
