A. STRANGE STORY TO TELL.

Te had quite recently joined the British India steamer Chupra, Captain R. H. Brown, which left Chittagong, Upper Bur- mah, on the present voyage on the 31st December with a cargo of grain. This was his first voyage in the Chupra, and on join- ing the vessel he landed sum of money, 20, to the fireman serang for safe-keeping, but subsequently asked for a return of the

inoncy. A quarrol arose and the money was pt returned to him. He alleges that the fireman serang bore him a grudge after: that. On Tuesday night and yesterday morning he had been at work, below and feeling very hot went on deck for a breath of fresh air. It must have

been about 5 530 'eluck and he was holding the railing and enjoy. ing the cooling breeze when ho Wab

The fireman serang was a stronger man than he and eventually pushed him bodily- over the railing. As he was going over the side, the Lascar.says he shouted; but he cannot tell whether anyone on board heard him. He was an excellent swimmer, and saya' that as far as he can remember he must have been about an hour and a half in the It was very cold and he felt stume- what cramped with the cold, but his only fear was of sharks. What, then, is to be done? It appears to me that a double patrol of Police should be placed on these roads during certain hours of the

The West River Tragedy.

A West River correspondent sends us particulars of the On Fat affair and the shooting of Mr Morrison, but he has been an- ticipated by the story that appeared in our Saturday's issue. He tells us, howevós, how the pirates wore identified. All the passengers were made to pass the gangway one at a time, and the informer was stationed on a guard boat outside holding a soldier's hand. As a pirate appeared, he squeezed the soldier's hand, and the man identified was taken and bound. Mr Mor- rison, one pirare, two of the crew of the On Fat and the captain's ten-year-old son- were wounded. It is stated that, in addi- tion to the eleven pirates captured, twelve more were to have joined the vessel at Kam Chuk. They intended to kill the captain and pilots, and utilize the On Fat to hold up one of the morning river steamers, so it is a good thing the contem-

plated outrage was nipped in the bud. Mr Fabian, the tidewaiter at Samshui, deserves credit for his detection of the man who afterwards turned informer. But for Mr Fabian's alertness, the pirates would pro- bably have carried out their nefarious and murderous designs.
