RACING NOTES.

Up to the present, there has not been much enthusiasm displayed with regard to the forthcoming Race Meeting, but is the entries closed on Saturday last the Sweeps will soon be in full swing, and this alone makes things move a bit.,

The Derby being the race of the meeting is at present in everyone's mouth. Judg. ing by the form shown, there will probably be seven starters: Major Denny's Dia- mond, Mr Christie's Tyro, Col. Hughes' Brilliant. Mr Hinds' Sequah, Mr Hart Buck's Pirate, Mr Morgan Phillips' Le- Smith's gucy, and probably either Mr Finelle or Mr. Hunter's Cheesai. The best times, up to the present have been made by Leucy, Brilliant and Sequah, and I shall expect to see them finish in the order named.

than six.

I trust one of the members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be present at the races, as out of the forty-five China ponies that arrived it would be absolute cruelty to start more Even the China Pony contin- gent lave been obliged to admit that they have been fairly had. One Shanghai Mafoo works out the probable profit made by the dealer, after paying all expenses, at more than 6000 dollars. Surely the Stewards should have made arrangements to see that pukkaGrillins woresent down. It makes it all the more annoying when we hear that the Shanghai Hotel bedrooms are full of ponies which can do their 3/4 in 1.35 and their 1.1/4 mile in 2.45; and we understand they could have been sent to Hongkong at an average of about 200 taels.

The death on Thursday morning, at the Alice Memorial Hospital, of the Rev. Wong Yuk ch'o is lamented widely and unfeigned- ly. His personal friends, Chinese and non-Chinese, comprised a large circle, for he was, in apostolic phrase, a helper of many. Richly endowed with varied gifts, Mr Wang was that rare combination- genuine student and a thoroughgoing man of affairs. In him, sagacity and foresight were united with quiet persistency of endeavour. These were marked character isties; and he put forth his best powers in the cause of Christian enlightenment and officials in the Province have availed them for the current year :-

Hongkong Tides. The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au. tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa. ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Or. dinary Spring Tides, which has been found

to be 2 feet below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height given in the table,
