If so, a task will be set for the two giant Cunarders, to bo built with the object of recapturing the record from the Germans, which the finest skill of the British shipbuilding yards may fail to accomplish. The exact dimensions and other details of

the two Cunard liners are still undeter

nined, but a writer in the Sei ntifié· Am- eries understands that the longth will be about 750 feet, beam 75 feet, and horse- power about 50,000. The chances are that the steam turbine will not be introduced on these vessels. Their value for ships of this great size is still problematical, and too much depends on the new liners to make cxperiments advisable. The Cunard Comp- any will most probably rely for the immense horse-power required upon vertical, quadruple-expansion reciprocating engines, and the question has lately been under dis- [ALF of EUROPEAN HOUSE in cussion whether the powershall be developed

have to carry only 17,000 or 18,000 horse- power, or less than is now carried by those of the Deittschland. The objection to triple-screws is the very obvious, one that the engine-room staff would have to be greater for three engines than for two. With this exception, however, it my be said that practically every other argument tells in favour of triple-screws; and, although it may at first seem that more of the ship's space would be taken up by three engine- rooms than by two, the difference is not so . great as might be supposed. The merica of the triple-screw system have been proved in the case of the fast commerce destroyers of the United States Navy, and it is pointed out that the French naval architects, prob- ably the best in the world, appear to have adopted the triple-scrow exclusively for all

the large ships of their Navy. From the

passengers' point of vier, no doubt, the question of vibration is second to none in importance. It is not pretended that any liner fitted with a successful stoam turbine will have a great advantage over high- powered boats driven by reciprocating engines.-Statesman.

Even after the croupy cough has developed, it will prevent the attack. There is no danger in given this remedy as it contains nothing injurious. It always cores and cures quickly. Assuming that England, Scot- land, and Ireland supply the total number of seamen in the same proportion as they supply the number employed on March 31, 1901, it would appear that, in proportion to their population, England supplies not quite so many seamen as Ireland and only about half the number supplied by Scotland. The seamen of the various nationalities aré distributed amongst the ratings in very different proportions. There is a large pro gentage of petty officers and engineers of Scottish birth, and of able sesmen and fire- men of Irish Birth, and nearly half the foreign seamen were serving in the rating) of able seamen. Particulars respecting the age and nationality of the individual mem börs of the crews of 215 vessels, most of which wore trading abroad on March 31, 1901, were not obtained. In 1891 nearly one-half of the Lascars were employed upon vessels trading entirely abroad. The number of Lascars thus employed has risen from 10,535 in, April, 1891, to 13,100 in March, 1896 and 14,680 in March, 1901. But there .hay been greater increase in สาย

number of Lasears on vessels which *- trade to this country. From 10,787 in April, 1891, the number rose to 14,811 in March, 1898, and 40 18,930 in March, 100f. There wero in March, 1901, 130,053 seamen, of whom 33,505, were Lasers, employed upon steam vessels in the foreign trade, and the Lascars, therefore, formed 25.8 per cent. of the total number of sea- men on those vessels. Upon all the sail ing and steam trading vessels there were 180,036 seamen, of whom 33,610 were Lascars-tlint is 18.0 per cent. of the tutal,!

which English is taught, but the offer was not entertained by the Education Department, which threw cold water on the iden, probably berauso only a compara tively small number of British children are educated in the Colony.
