The wintry winds whistled round tho Castle of Dromore, and below the piping of the winds there was a dull persistent sound, the thud of the seas breaking at the foot of the crag on which the ancient house of the L'Estranges was built.
There were four persons in the room, Michael L'Estrengo, Mistress Pamela his sistor. Eily his daughter, and M. le Vicomte de Poitiers.

The last, a young gentleman of about twenty-three years, stood with a bowed head holding a skein of wool which Mistress Panola was winding into a ball. He was Extremely elegant in his coat and breeches of pearl grey silk, with white waistcint and white silk stockings. His hair ho wore powdered, albeit the new Jacobinism was bringing in the fashion of wearing one's own hair; and it could not be denied that He the powder was becoming to his faco. wore a slight moustache with points at either end. Its blackness and the darkness of his vivacious eyes were in pleasant-con-- trast with his powder.
Looking at him, bent low before Mistress Pamela's faded beauty, Michael L'Es- trange's heart smote him, at what he had to do.
He glanced sorrowfully at his daughter's profile where she sat at the old piano with

CHRISTMAS AND YULE.
CHRISTMAS time brings a mingled cup of joy.
All anniversaries have the bitterness of reminding many of us that 27.00 10 another year has passed and that one fewer remains to be lived in this world, which, with all its faults, no one is 8 anxious to leave. After a certain age, few men and no women are glad to be a year older. Still, there is none so old that he cannot hope to live unother year, and the uncertainty as to how many more Christmases we may each see is a precious possession. A wise man would be almost equally unhappy if he knew exactly what span of life were before him as he would be if he were assured he should live for ever.
