IV.
We returned to Hongkong by the Bong- kong, Canton and Macao Steam-boat (6, 8.8. Fatshan. The steamer was due to leave at 4.30 p.m., but we did not get under way before 5 p.m. She took on board quite a fow bales of raw silk. Each bale is worth about Mex. $1,000, weighs about 115 lbs. and is easily carried by one coolie. What was most interesting also, a large quantity of live fish for the Hongkong market was received into tubs on board the steamer, from special boats, in which they had been kept alive in water. There were also largo quantities of vegetables for con- sumption in the great British seaport,

I might note here that there is little rice exported from Canton and not so much tea as formerly. This lattor item, together with silks and mattings, constitutes Can- ton's chief exports. Additional articles are cassia, palm-leaf fans, China-ware, fire- crackers, preserves, bristles and feathers. Also, in the way of curios, silverware, black-wood, lacquer-ware, jade-stone, orna- ments, embroideries and ivory.

The stairways con- municating between the main and the upper decks are closed in with irou gratings. when the steamer is under way, to prevent any of these gentry, who may have come aboard and be travelling under the guise of steerage passengers, from gaining control of the ship. A recent attempt of this kind was discovered just in time by a Customs Officer, in examining, for dutiable goods, the belongings of intending passengers for Hongkong by a rivor steamer on the point of leaving Canton, happening to turn a number of baskets of fruit, carried by some of these follows, upside down, when quite a number of up-to-date Mauser pistols were. disclosed, and as many steerage passengers bolted for the shore. The very nature of the Canton Delta-another instance of a thousand or more islands, with intricate channels-has afforded a home and a hiding-place for generations of pirates, which the great trade of Canton and neigh- borhood. has attracted. Survivors of these historical pirates still exist after upwards of sixty years of established British power at Hongkong, piracies not being uncommon about the Delta, even now. were put up a number of centuries ago, aro now usually in a state of ruin, and are very picturesque. There are two kinds, the faller being nine, eleven, thirteen or more storeys in height. They are supposed to exert a beneficial influence over the neigh- bourhood. In connection with this in- Huence, or fungshui, as it is called, a friend Some- of mine tells the following story, time ago, some Hongkong and Canton Chinese obtained a concession from the Government of the Two Kwang' for the exclusive right to manufacture paper by foreign machinery for a period of years, A merchant and an engineer from Hongkong were put in practical charge of the under- taking. A site was chosen at a place eight on The up the Fa-ti Creek miles
Canton "to Fatshan. On from WRY
belief in fungshui account of their and to save future trouble, it was consider- ed a stroke of policy to consult with the elders of the neighbourhood concerning the plans of the building, &c., which were to e of foreign design. These gentlemen passed everything but the big chimney. which was declared to be bad. Here was a quandary, for of what good can a factory Some knowing be without a chimney?
one, however, suggested that they be tried with two chimneys, and, upon this change being made, the plans were passed. To prove that these worthies were correct in their decision, two of the local students succeeded in their examinations the follow- ing year.
BIVER BARRIERS..
We also pass through some of the River Barriers, which the Chinese put in with a view of preventing war vessels passing up. Mr Clark has supplied me with the follow- ing list of those now in the River :--
On Cambridge Reach, about five nilch from Cantou, there are two sets, one of wooden piles and one of stone. The first only is visible, and leaves a 100 ft. channel There is also an- near the south shore
other wooden pile barrier on this reach one mile below Whampon.
On Blenheim Reach, seven miles below Canton, is an old stone barrier, not visible, called Tai-shek, with a 100 ft. passage along the north shore. There used to be another wooden pile barrier five miles further down.
'bridge' (wooden On Colinson Reach, n pile) barrier about eighteen miles below Canton. Then, another half mile below, an iron screwpile barrier.
The stone barriera date back to 1855-07. when the British and French jointly occupied. Canton. Wooden ones were first put in during the war with France. Those now in the River, howover, together with the irou screw pile barriers, date only from the Theso barriors recent war with Japan.
are useless from a foreign military point of view, and are a terrible hindrance to naviga- tion, which they certainly obstruct, as they allow but a vory narrow passage for a steamer to pass through. These passages were to be closed in time of nood.
Whampoa, which we passed during the night, is fortified, and has twó graving- docks used for naval purposes by the Chinese Government.
THE BOGUE FORTS.
I was sorry that we again passed the Bogue Forts at night. They are situated at Bocca Tigris, at the mouth of the Pearl River, which narrows here, there being several islands lying in, the channel as well. On the bank of the River, and on some of these islands are long, rambling, crenelated walls, enclosing a large amount of ground A section -these are the Bogue Forts.

modern and fairly heavy guns, mostly Krupp, as is also the case at Whampoa The Bogue Forts are the first line of the City's defence, and Whampoa is the second. There is nothing beyond these worth count- ing.

Insurances.
WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW
about a life assur-
ance company is
just what you
would want to know
about a bank or any
other institution
in which you
thought of investing:-
What is the company's earning ability as shown by its past history?
What is the outlook for future dividends as indicated by its accumulated surplus 7
These two ques-
tions answered,
and the rest is of secondary importance. Any
agent of the Equitable
will answer
these questions--
or any others--to
your satisfaction.
