| Russian Oppression of Finland.

A statue to Elins Lonnrot, the father of Finnish literature, was unveiled in silonce at Helsingfors, the capital of Finland. The Governor forbade the singing of the Finnish Anthem, and claimed the right to. revise specches.

[Elins Lonnrot (1802-1884) was born at Sanimatti, in Nyland, practised medicine for 20 years at Kajona, and was Professor of Finnish at Helsingfors (1853-62). He published collections of folk-songs, pro- verbs, and riddles, and also the great Finnish dictionary in 1880. The prohibi- tion of the Finnish Anthem at the un veiling of the memorial is another instance of the determination of Russia to crush all the rights of Finland. The St. Petersburg corresppudent of the Times recently wrote that the Russian Government has ap- parently resolved once and for all to put

an end to the constitutional privileges hitherto enjoyed by the Finns. A number of new laws were drawn up in St. Peters- burg and were to be published in Helsing fors involving the complete abolition of all those securities for public and individa- 2179 al liberties which had hitherto existed in

Ptomaine Poisoning at a School

Picnic.

Melbourne, Nov. 4.-Persons attending the Methodist Sunday school picnic at Werribee to-day were thrown into a state of the gravest alarm by the development of symptoms of poisoning on a wholesale scale a couple of hours after the midday meal was served out. About 360 persons, mostly children, took part in the picnic, and a large number of them ate heartily at lunch of ham und beef sandwiches, which had been prepared the previous evening. Within an hour or two about 100 of those who partook of the sandwiches were seized with violent pains, and developed all the symptoms of Acute poisoning, Many of the children lay helpless on the ground, and it was feared that many deaths would result. Happily medical help was promptly available, and all except 20 recovered under treatment. The 20 who had to be removed to the hospital recovered later in the evening and The cause is were able to return home. attributed to promaine poison set up in the meat used in the sandwiches.

In his discourse the Bishop stated that Providence twice saved the life of King Edward to enable a more perfect fulfilling of the Kingly conception of duty.

CHAMBERLAIN'S COUGH REMEDY S'intended especially for coughs, colds, croup, whooping cough and influenza. It has becune famous for its cures of these diseases over a large part of the civilized world. The most flattering testimonials

have been received, giving accounts of its good works; of the aggravating and per- sistent coughs it has cured; of severe colde that have yielded promptly to its soothing effects, and of the dangerous attacks of croup it has cured, often saving the life of the child. Tho extensive use of it for whooping cough her shown that it robs. that disease of all dangerous results. It is especially prized by mothers because it contains nothing injurious and there is not the least danger in giving it, even to babies, It always oures and cures quickly. GOLD CURRENCY IN HONGKONG. To the Editor of the CHINA Mail.'

Hongkong, November 27. BIR,-Your leading article of last night will rouse many of us to reflect and to ask questions. Here are a few :-

1. Is it not a fact that the fictitious Government value of the rupeo in India has rendered life there almost insupport- able; and that the present problem appears more difficult of solution than the original

ono?..

2. Is it not a fact that the adoption of a gold standard in Japan has been attended by an increased price of labour and cost of living and that there is as yet no indica tion of theso rates growing fixed?

3. If the muggestion of adopting gold cur- rency in the Straits Settlements, and of treating in the Philippines a Mexican dol. lar as equal to fifty cents gold, has caused a considerable depression in silver currency, how low will the dollar be after these changes have been affected?

that at the present yield of gold there can be no profit.

I would only be too pleased to Sco vigorous prospecting work carried on in the North, but it needs a large amount of Capital and labour to do it effectually.

Judging from the Chairman's remarks and from recent correspondence, I gather there is some difficulty in raising the neces- sary funds, and I trust you will not take it amiss if I make a suggestion which for a time would tide us over the difficulty. This would be to develop Swah only, keeping only one European there, assisted hy one or two Chinese mandors. The Mill to be run by myself with the assistance of Mr Richardson, the Accountant, whoat the pro- sent time is helping mo in this work and allowing me to get about for several hours duringtheday. TheCompany ought to make some arrangements for dispensing with the services of the other two Europeans, and this I think could be done amicably by offering them a return passage, or such other inducerent as the Directors may deem fit. The labour would be consider- ably reduced all round with a correspond- ing decrease in the expenditure. As soon profits are obtained from Swab, we could then consider the resumption of prospect ing operations.
