The Board of Trade Returns of Inso!- vency simply food for much thought as re- gards the espacity of the weaker sex to successfully carry on commercial enter- prises. I note that the largest number of failurea is amongst grocers, drapers and haberdashers, and milliners and dress. makers; and that the great majurity of women eugseed in there trades are either married or widows, There is little doubt that this is largely due to the fact that wo- anen, having no carly business training, tuo often endeavour to run a concern, which either illness or death has prevented the father, brother or husband attending to. Then, again, the miserable conviction is forced upon me, that although a woman is very obedient, a splendid imitator and does very well under direction, when left to her- self she often displays a lamentab'e lack of initiative or knowledge of business methods, and in these lays of keen competition one must be ever striving, not to move abreast with, but to go one better that your neigh- bours. Of course, there are very bright exceptions to this rule, as instanced by the paying occupation of running fashionable teashops, which is now regarded as essenti- ally a means by which ladies can earn their living.

Bright colours are the very reverse of de ENGLAND and AMERICA THE WAVERLEY HOTEL,
rigueer at present, and it would be safe to prophesy that lifteen out of any twenty women gathered together would ho clothed in pepper-and-salt tweed, black zibheline flecked with white, or grey and black check materials. Not only dresses, but coats are included in this sobor scheme, and I have even seen it extened to hats which resemble nothing so much as chess-boards. Many ways are devised to relieve these styles from dulness, and some of thein are so suc- cessful that their popularity is not to be wondered at. A large proportion of the jackets are double-breasted, and for mor- ning wear they are neatly closed over the chest and have edgings or bands of black braid or silk, but if a matinée has been arranged for later in the day, all that you have to do is to undo the coat which falls back into smart, laco-covered revers, show, ing underneath some fussy front of chiffon, crêpe de chine, or silk. The plain belt is reversed and a velvet band is seen in its place, while the little buttons down one side of the skirt are unhooked and the re vers they form caught back under the braid which previously seemed to form the solu trimming, and then a view is given of a beautiful panel of velvet corresponding in colour with the wajatbelt. Such a hat as I have mentioned above can also he trans- formed into a thing of beauty. This kind of headgear has generally a flat crown, which is caught to the brim by means of jet or 'novenu art' brooches. When these are taken out, the crown is pinned back and discloses soft folds of lace-covered silk or velvet. And so with the aid of these little ingenuities, it will be agreed that there is no reason why the apparel of those who have to think of the pennies should not be us chic as their more monoyed Bisters.

There is not much to choose between the two V.R.C. boats, which have been picked with better judgment than last 10 year. I am glad to soe Armstrong in one of the crews this year at No. 3; he will be a tower of strength in C. Hance's boat. The crew might perhaps be improved by sub stituting J. Mr Wakeman, Official Receiver, was Goldring examined and read a statement nude by Allenby the prisoner when he appeared before the Registrar. Luk Hang said then that he went to Canton because he was ill. Prior to the Public Examination, however, he told the witness, through an interpreter, that he went away to avoid his creditors.
The interpreter confirmed this statement. Mr Slade raised the point that before a person could be convicted under the Ordin- ance, proof that a Receiving Order had been made before he fled was necessary. The words were. Any person against whom a Receiving Order is made quits."

also well represented, and there should be
a very good race between these three boats for first place. I hear whisperings of a split in the English camp owing to No. 3 being too full of engagements at the 4 V.R.C. to devote more than one day a week to training for this event. The Eng- lishmen will lose a good man if he with draws. In this instance, I do not blame the Boat Club men for wanting more prac tise, and I am afraid the V.R.C. members are crowding too many races into the two days. They will find it no small task when they have to row against fresh crews
