The days of mythological beliefs have gone. This is an ora of science--a mat- ter-of-fact age. DEE FERNE OSTEN, 3:
Band 1, Heft 3 THE HANOI EXPOSITION
Duutsche Druckeri and Verlagsanstalt : Shanghai.
The special features of the East Asia Magazine in German, as distinct from the
English issue reviewed recently in these pages, consist in two Articles. The first, by A. Tscheppe, 5.9., treats of the earliest events in the ancient history of that region of country lying in or near the German Colony of Kiastschau, with special refer- ence to the part known as Tseng Chau or Green Island.
A second paper by L. Odontius is an attempt-painstaking, elaborate, scholarly -to compare the life and teaching of Plato with the life and teaching of Confucius. In the Historical paper we are reminded that East Shantung is the birth place of China's ancient civilization. Valuable pro- ducts such as silk, salt, gold, and iron lent
this region, in very early times, commer cial celebrity. Strategically, in relation to the vast empire of China, its im portance cannot well be over-estimated The Germans have planted their Colony bard by the spring and fount of Chinese history. This article, under review, begins with a notice of the ancient Sage Emperor Shun, who is said to have reigned earlier than 2000 years B.C. According to Mon- cius, Shun was born in the town of Chu- feng, in the territory of Tung Yi, which, it appears, is now the district city of Chu Cheng, 180 Li only from Kiautschau, Much ancient history can be learned from this paper; and we notice particular- ly that Kiautschau was once part of the Kingdom of Tsasi. Our hopes respecting a further instalment of these thoroughly en- lightening sketches seem to be well founded.
Historic parallels, traced felicitiously on Jines of sound investigation, never fail in suggestiveness, and Mr Odontius works out his parallel of Plato and Confucius with no little ingenuity. He finds striking and

THE RAVAGES OF WAR.
Of war's ravages dwellers in South Africa know too much, but fortunately not all. Thero is surely nothing more depressing than the spectacle of burnt and looted villages and farms, vineyards and fruitful fields wasted and spoiled, with here and there rusted and abandoned ma- chinery. Of all these horrors this continent can furnish examples enough and to spare; yet when compared with the desolation which mark- od the track-of-the-invading army_throngh highly-cultivated and populous Franco in 1870-71, there is scarce a sign of damage in the theatre of the late war.
The war waged by discaso against man is in many respects like the war waged by man against man Its most important difference is that it knows no peace, but fights ceaselessly until it slays or is slain. It knows nothing either of armistice or compromiso.
'There could surely be no greater torture than to slowly starve to death in the midst of plenty, writes Mr. J Kelly, of Dobsou Street, Port Elizabeth, S.A., on March 12, 1902; yot that was the fate which once stared me in the face. For thirteen years I was afflicted with fapeworm, and from being a strong and healthy man declined to a state of weakness and emi- ciation. I derived little or no nourishment from food and my consequent lassitude ren- dered me quite fit for my ordinary daily work. I was living at Durban at the time, and the doctor who had charge of my case there tried Boveral methods to free me of my trouble, but was powerless to effect that which Mother Seigel's Curative Syrtip afterwards so speedily accomplished. On several occasions I was made to abstain from solid food for as long as five consecutive days, and for months at a time I lived without requiring the aid of a knife and fork. One mixture, which my doctor gave me as a last resort, I took for four months, aud at the end of that time was as had as ever. Toften think of all that I suffered during those years, and wonder how I endured it; but the bitterest part is to know, as I do How that the misery was quite unnecessary.

It took only six bottles to produce this grand result.'

dreadful-down sensation. Fearful headaches reduced me to such a státo of weakness that at last I was unable to do little things for myself, and I was much troubled by a sharp pain between the shoulders. Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup having been recommend- ed to me, I was induced to buy a bottle, and experienced so much benefit from it that I bought two others. These three bottles com. ploted my cure-a thing which some of the best doctor in the country had failed to achieve. I have never since been without it in the house, and am always glad of an opportunity to tell others what it has done for me."

Temperature. HONGKONG, November 14, 1902.
It has become famous for its cures of these diseases over a largo part of the civilized world. The most flattering testimonials have been received, giving accounts of its good works; of the aggravating and per- sistent coughs it has cured; of severe colds that have yielded promptly to its soothing BAROMETER effects, and of the dangerous attacks of croup it has cured, often saving the life of the child. The extensive use of it for whooping cough has shown that it robe that disease of all dangerous results. It is especially prized by mothers because it contains nothing injurious and there is not the least danger in giving it, even to babies. It always cures and cures quickly.
