It's a dreadful trial to a uncle's feelin's, that cro, Loydsey.

Nonsense, said Leyds. I ain't goin' to let no Emperor pull my republican leg-- don't you frêt yourself about that; I know you're a judge o'these things. Fill up your pipe, and I'll read you the ultimatum- there.'

We cannot distinctly say whether it was the prospect of a pipe, or the consolatory reflection that a fatal disposition to over- reach themselves ran in the Boer family and couldn't be helped, which calmed Mr

Kruger's feelings and caused his grief to subside. We should rather be disposed to say that the result was attained by combin- ing the two sources of consulation, for he repeated the second in a low tone very frequently, filling the first meanwhile with a fragrant wad of black Boer tobacco.~.

Leyds dipped his pen into the ink to be ready for any corrections, and begun with a very theatrical air:

**Glorious 33 1

'Stop,' said Mr Kruger ringing the bell, A double glass o' the inwariable, my dear.'

The lemons is getting werry short, re- plied the girl, who, with unusual quickness in the Dutch, appeared, vanished, return ed, and disappeared.

'You've got through a deal o' lemons lately, observed Løyds.

'Yes, replied Mr Kruger, and the gen- erals didn't pay for their loving-cups neither; seemed to think it ought to come out of the Treasury, which ceased to exist,

Are you weak, tired, easily fatigued, all-worn-out? If so, your systoni: lacks

tone.

Your system needs recuperating. You need a good strengthening tonic. When the system is in a depressed condi- tion, its resisting power is lowered and it is an easy prey to disease. Germs may readi- ly multiply upon the tissues, and most serious results may ensue. The most for- midable discases may be easily contrasted, Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil

is all that a true tonic implies. It is n delicious wine representing all the midi- cinal virtues of the best cod liver oil, and of the best form of iron. It is reliable in every respect. Nothing secret about it. It is a scientific preparation based on scientific research, and will produce results where. nothing else will. It increases the appetite, improves digestion and stimulates nutri- tion. Under its influence the food eaten actually feeds the body. Now blood is 4made, new.nerves built up and now tissues created to replace the old, weak and dis- eased ones, Wholesale from A. S. Watson & Co., Ltd., Hongkong..

CHAMBERLAIN'S COUGH REMEDY

S

Is intended especially for coughs, colds,

croup, whooping cough and influenza. It has become famous for its cures of these diseases over a large part of the civilized world. The most flattering testimonials have been received, giving accounts of its good works; of the aggravating and per- sistent coughs it has cured; of severe colds that have yielded promptly to its soothing effects, and of the dangerous attacks of croup it has cured, often saving the life of the child. The extensive use of it for whooping cough hes shown that it robs that discase of all dangerous results. It is especially prized by mothers because it contains nothing injurious and there is not the least danger in giving it, even to babies, It always cures and cures quickly. Hongkong Tides.

The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical mango Uffico in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa-

ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Or. dinary Spring Tides, which has been foun to be 2 feet below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 6 ft. 7 n., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in, to the height given in the table.
