THE LADY KILLER. BY H. de Vore
Stacpoole. 1. Fisher Unwin. 2/6.3 This romance deals with some of the despicable sides of Bohemian life. Its at- mosphere is Anglo-Italian. Within its few
sordid side of the Italian, and the weakest side of the English charactor. The poor plot ended in a miserable failure as it de- served to do. As to the method employed to make a man come down as low as the title of the book, its saturnine weakness is only surpassed by its gross improbability. Poverty of resource, impossibility of situn tion, cunningness of imbecility, bombasc, and potty intrigue make up a poor covering for the failures, suicidos, sudden deaths to which the hapless author is driven. It is difficult to understand the motif, for a book of this kind. The author betrays. knowledge of human nature in some phases, and at times a command of languago, which would enable him to produce a volume really worth reading.

The name-tale is the longest and strongest of the three. The scene is laid in a Russian doss-house. Here drift the ne'er- do-weels-clover and stupid-on a stream of vodky, to find a filthy shelter for their filthy bodies. The reoking air is further burdened with ravings against the success- ful and prosperous, spiced with humanistic philosophy from the Captain. The story has a lurid light; but by this nocturne the reader will obtaina correct impression of the modern Russian Sarisculottes. Wait- ing for the Ferry' brings out the stolidity

How to deal with the 'submerged tenth' is a bitter question in Russia as well as elsewhero. These dis. torted ethics of the tramp are calculated to upset the complacency of bourgois souls...

London neither repairs for- tune nor health. A discovered forgery sets the Bow Street runners on the track of a consumptive, disheartened, fretful husband, with his still devoted wife. Reaching a RICHMOND gypsy haunt in Derbyshire, he is anxious
to be rid of his wife, that the more easily. ho may escape to the wilds of the North. The former lover is sont for to conduct the hapless wife to her aged parents. At this point the events of the three days, hero related, really begin. The action moves vigorously in this romantic eyrie of Derby- shire. Interest is maintained on every page. diseases over a large part of the civilized world. The most flattering testimonials have been received, giving, accounts of its LD.good works; of the aggravating and per- sistent coughs it has cured; of severe colds that have yielded promptly to its soothing effects, and of the dangerous attacks of croup it has cured, often saving the life of the child. The extensive use of it for whooping cough has shown that it robs that disease of all dangerous results. It is especially prized by mothers: because it contains nothing injurious and there is not the least danger in giving it, even to babies. It always cures and cures quickly. OBJECTS.
The objects of this Company are to acquire, as a going concern, and extend the well-known mining undertakings and properties, hereinafter set out, belonging to Messrs. L. Vrard & Co., Hankow, to- gether with all the rights to and interes in the Vendors' Concessions, and with the benefit and responsibilities of all pending contracts and engagements of the business. The Vendors are making this salo to the present Company with a view to paying off certain family and other charges upon the business, and #s a means of providing further capital for its extension.
TERMS OF VENDORS.
CONCESSIONS, The firm of L. Vrard & Co. have under their control a large number of Chinese Mining Concessions located in Human and the adjuet provinces. Sixteen of these Concessions are approved and confirmed by the competent Authorities in Hunan, and arrangements have been made with the Chinese holders for the transfer of their agreements with the Vendors to the Com- pany.
Although systematic development work up to the present has been carried out on these Concessions, they have been judiciously selected by experts from a very large number gi prospected mining districts in what is believed to be the richest part of the Yangtzo Basin. The Vendors, having been the first in the field, have succeeded in securing some of the best and most cove- ted Chinoso concessions, where the mineral ores are partly on the surface and promise an extremely successful and lucrative work- ing.
ESTIMATE OF REVENGE.
The present plant is capable of turning out 100 tons per diem of crushed and rotin- ed Ores, but the capacity of the works and their output could easily be multiplied by the investment of about Tls. 31,000 for additional machinery. Taken at a low estimate the net profit for the Company on treated Ore is Tla. G per ton, so that if the trun-out be increased to only 1,000 per week, Tls. 6,000 per week, or Tls. 300,000 per annum, after payment of all expenses, will be earned. The agreements with the Hunan Board of Mining alone are, therefore, estimated as producing a revenue of about 30 per cent. per annum.
This anticipated return is confirmed by the following cortificate of Mr Arthur R. Leake, Chartered Accountant, who arrives at a slightly higher result:
Shanghai, 1st October, 1902.

Chinese Swarming to Philippines.
The Manila Times of the 29th ult. Baya:-That big exodus of Chinese from Manila, which ecccurred a few months ago, is in a fair way to turn about, judging from the outlook, in the form of an influx. The British steamer Diamante, which has just returned to this port froni Hongkong, brought over 600 passengers from Amoy, and Captain Rodgers states there are my. riads of celestials at the other end of the route awaiting transportation and ad- mission to Manila. Many of these Chinese are entitled under the laws to return to the Philippines, and many more are wait. ing for admission under the proposed con- tract labor law, which it is hoped congress will pass at its next session.

Notes:-As will perhaps be recalled, the insurrection of secret-society men in Kuangai last year, owing to the fewness of modern arms of precision in their hands, was not expected to be very formidable by the provincial high authorities of the Two Kuang. Just atthat time, bowever, Marshal Su got into trouble with his forces garrison- ing Kuangtung province, through an at- tempt to disband some 10,000 of them without paying the men their arrears of pay, amounting to over six months' wages. The men first objected to be disbanded, having been enlisted for five years and with three years more, to go. In the second place, they wanted their six months' arrears paid first before they would listen to the subject of disbandment and hand over their arms, which are all Mausers of the latost type. MEDICAL TESTIMONIALS:
Dr B. O'BRIEN, M.D., Civil Surgeon, Faizabad, says Mr N. Lazarus, optician,' examined my vision-to-day, and I have much pleasure in testifying to the accuracy with which he determined the proper glasses for me to wear. His method of examination is a very ingenious and se curate one, and by it he should be able toTM ascertain the proper glasses for the cor- rection of all the errors of refraction met with in the eye.
Surgeon-Major G. C. HALL, in charge of the Eye Hospital, Allahabad, says:—I have tested your Patent Refraction Test, and find it remarkably good and accurate, and I think it should prove very useful to all who are called upon to treat errors of refraction, specially Astigmatism, which is so common and yet so frequently over- looked.
Bo. Dr BEAUMONT, F.R.O.S., M.D sidency Surgeon, Hyderabad, says :-Me Lazarus has shown me his method of testing... the eyes of persons whose vision is de fective, and I consider that any one requir. ing Spectacles may depend on being care- fully fitted by him.

about a life assur-
ance company is just what you
would want to know
about a bank or any
other institution in which you
thought of investing:
What is the company's earning ability as shown by its past history?
What is the outlook for future dividends as indicated by its accumulated surplus?
These two ques-
tions answered,
and the rest is of secondary importance. Any
agent of the Equitable
will answer
these questions--
or any others-to
your satisfaction.

The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an su. tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsul during
the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table is Low Water Or dinary Spring Tides, which has been found
to be 2 feet below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gange at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height
