The First Atlantic Service Tendor.

Montreal, Oct. 1.-At the annual meet- ing of the shareholders of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company held to-day, the following Directors were re-elected un Animously: Rt Hon Lord Stratchona and Mount Royal, G.C.M.G., Sir William Van Horne, K.C.M.G., Mr Richard R. At the meeting of the new Board Sir William Van Horne was re-elected Chair- man of the Board, and Sir Thomas G. Shaughnessy, President of the Company. ·

In moving the adoption of the Report, the President said:

Koop and growing interest in the for- tility and productiveness of North-Western Canada is indicated by the increase in your and sales during the past year. Settlers attracted by cheap lands and agricultural conditions, that nesure to them and their children farms and homes on a basis of in- vestment not now possible in the thickly- populated districts south of the Inter- national Boundary, are coming into Man- itoba and the Territories in gratifying num bors. Nearly all of them will make ex-

Up to the present time your Directors have no information as to the policy likely to be adopted by the Government. Suspected Jewellery Theft.

At the beginning of this month, a Malay was arrested by Detective Inspector Brennan in a Singapore pawnshop trying to dispose of $20,000 worth of jewellery which it was suspected he had stolen. The Malay said he had received the jewellery from a Javauçse prince, who had com- missioned him to pawn it, but as he had no credentials his statement was clisbelieved

by the Police. The jewellery consists of

gold centipede belt, several dragon krosangs or brooches, rings, diamonds, &c., and evidently belong to one collection of jewels, but as no one appeared to claim the jewellery the Malay was remanded for enquiry. It now transpires that towards the latter part of 1900 the Sultan of Deli was robbed of a quantity of jewellery similar to that at present in the hands of the Police, and one of the Sultan's men is now on his way to Singapore to see if he can identify the jewellery.

cash down practice adopted by some firms would not be a great advantago in the Colony, where salaries are paid by the month, and at the end of the month. The result of that method of paying wages is that for the first third of the month there is a wild burst of extravagance, during the second third nccessaries are secured on dis- advantageous terms on the promise of pay- ment at the end of the month, and during the third starvation conditions prevail. THE NAVAL ACTIVITY.

Shanghai and Hunan both Probable Causes.

That the present activity at the Naval Yard and on the British warships still re- maining in Hongkong harbour portonds far more serious work than the demonstrations which have from time to time become a part of the ser routine of the China Squad- run, is the opinion held in semi-official quarter. Advices from Shanghai, we are told, disclose a serious state of things, and, although, of course, the utmost secrecy is maintained as to the exact nature of the danger, persons in a position to form a shrewd guess incline towards the belief that something like a deadlock has occurred in the evacuation preliminaries. We have very good authority for the statement that the orders relating to two of the hurriedly. summoned warships wore due to the feeling of unrest which this deadlock is reportedl to have occasioțied. t the other hand, very reliable advices poinú tu oporations in commection with the Hanan affair, in regard

This was why the trial was stopped and the ship brought back into the harbour. She will be put to a second trial on Friday, and then put to sea. tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Or dloary Spring Tides, which has been found to be 2 feet below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gange at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height
