It is popularly supposed that an eel rather prefers being skinned alive. Stu

not singular in this respect.
Thore is an amimal called a shareholder who literally gloats over the process, and resents the interference of any one who seeks to rescue him from the operation. This is so true to nature that no further description of the animal called a share- holder need be given. To those curious in these matters its habitat is easily found. Though it is disseminated through- out the country it makes an annual migration to centres in the big cities. In London it can be found in abundance any day in the year-except Sundays, as the law would not be complied with if a meet- ing took place on that day. In addition, shareholders are supposed to be highly respectable, and, therefore, it is necessary
for them to appear in church on Sunday, and, in some cases, to collect the offerings made by the faithful to convert the Jews, THE SHAREHOLDERS' HABITAT. They mostly congregate at the Cannon-

scene; but on attempting to enter the room
--
ho is firmly but politely told that, not being
a shareholder, ho cannot be admitted into
its sacred precincts—a statement which
angers him greatly, as he is evidently a
student in natural history, thirsting after
and
knowledge for the purpose of instructing all Watches Guaranteed. the public. Other similar students arrive, and are treated in the same manner, whereupon their case is taken up by some of the shareholders, and a babel of noise is. heard, in which the words, Keeping out the Press,' 'Shameful,' Disgraceful,' are frequently in evidence.
A COMPANY MEETING,
After a while those admitted stamp their feet, and then some half-dozen grave and reverend seigniors emerge from a door behind the table and occupy the chaira facing the audience. If the students of natural history have been admitted they occupy the chairs on the opposite side of the table. The occupant of the armchair raps the table with the ivory hammer, and, standing up, makes a speech.
From this point the habits of the genus vary. Sometimes his rising is the signal for cat-calls, offensive remarks, and excite. ment among those admitted. This is us. ually the case when, the students have been kept outside. On other occasions his ri. sing is welcomed by thumping of fect and umbrellas. The latter are generally used when it is known that a good dividend will bo declared. When this is the caso every- thing passes off quietly, and compliments fly about in all directions.
These meetings are more interesting to those in thirst of knowledge when some- thing has irritated the genus shareholder. Then it is that those occupying the body of the room almost fight with the grave and reverend seigniors at the table, who have decidedly a bad time. It is not unknown for fists to be shaken in their faces. But they adroitly repeat the words 'bears' and destroy the value of your shares,' whore- upon an entire change takes place. The minute specimen who dared to ask for information is annihilated by a wave of the arm of the occupant of the chair and the shouts of those in the body of the room.

passes out of the room and gathers in little ENGLAND and
groups outside, each group surrounding an excited example of the genus. Any student who happens to have waited outside is in- formed of all that took place by half a dozen speaking at once.
Whether the
proceedings are fatal to those who attend is a matter that requires further clucidation, but it is certain that scarcely anybody attends the next annual assemblage, excopt the small individual who was silenced by the majestic wave of the chairman's arm.
Those who have made the idiosyncrasies of the genus shareholder a study testify to his being a most despicable type of humanity, an epitome of selfishness and ingratitude not to be equalled in any other human being. Common humanity has no place in his mind. All he thinks of is money; hence he is always ready to support knavery and injustice if ho fancies he can see his way to improve the value of his shares by so doing.Anthony Pulbrook in the Daily Mail.

secretion of the mucus, and the relief afforded is only temporary. As soon as the effect of the opium passes off, the malady returns in a more severe form. It always cures and cures quickly. For sale by. All Dealers; WATKINS Ltd., General Agents.

Some people are weakly and ouncinted, yet they are not, to say, sick. Their appetites are fair, they cat good, wholesome food, but they cannot gain flesh. The face is, their nutritive functions are deficient. The food may even ho digested, but is not properly assimilated. With loss of, or lack of, sufficient flesh there is a corresponding decline of strongth and vigour. Comeliness of form is dependent upon graceful, curves, plumpness, rather than upon angles. Bony prominences, hollow cheeks and eyes, are not pleasing to the sight.
Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil is an admirablo flesh-builder. It will in- crease the weight of almost anyono. It improves the appetite, stimulates digestion, builds up nutrition. It presents cod liver oil so long lauded as a flesh producer, in a much improved and more activo form. It contains no harmful nor obnoxius ingredi- ents and always produces good results. A wonderful flesh-creator for those who can. not get fat. Stearn's Wine produces ad- petite, flash and strength. Wholesale from A, S. Watson & Co., Ltd., Hongkong,

Capt. A. M. Jensen was only 24 years of age.
