PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN.

Here is a portrait of Queen Alexandra

by an American girl in London :

We don't go to the theatre to witness a play, but to see the audience. I thought we were going to be dis appointed and not see her at all, but, just before the curtain went up she and the King came in with some other people. She is rather tall and very sweet looking, but, oh, most awfully thin. She has lovely blue eyes, with a shine in them, like a baby's, but I was disappointed a bit, for I thought she had golden hair. To be quite can did, her hair is of quite a mahogany tint, but it was charmingly coiffured, and showed off her diamonds beauti- fully.

She looked very young and girlish, but I think she has the saddest face I've ever seech. She listened very attentively, and when she smiled you felt as though you wanted to have a good rousing cry,

I don't wonder one bit that people in England love her, for they simply can't help it.”

TWO MEAN MEN.

Of William and John Scott, after- wards Lord Stowell and Lord Eldoй,

Lord John Russell used to tell with infinite zest a story which he declared

to be highly characteristic of the methods by which they made their for-

tunes and position. When they were

of professional luck, they determined to

celebrate the occasion by haying a dinner at a tavern and going to the play.

When it was time to call for a reckon- ing, William Scott dropped a guinea.

He and his brother searched for it

in vain, and came to the conclusion

that it had fallen between the boards of the uncarpeted floor. This is a bad job,' said William; we must give up the play."

Stop a bit,' said John; I know a trick worth two of that,' and he called the waitress.

Betty,' said he, we've dropped two guineas. See if you can find them,"

Betty went down on her hands and knees, and found the one guinea, which had rolled under the fender.

That's a very good girl, Betty,' said John Scott, pocketing the coin, and when you find the other you can keep

it for your trouble."

And the prudent brothers went with

a light heart to the play, and so even- tually, to the Bench and the Wool- sack.

CORRESPONDENCE.

THE CHENCHAU MASSACRES. To the Editor of the Cusa MALL.' Canton, October 25. SIR-Your Editorial in the China Mail of Oct. 23 on the murder of the China Inland missionaries and the ultimatum of E. H. Fraser, Esq., H. M. Consul, was, in my humble opinion, not a bit too strong for this important crisis. When you say O that the great majority of foreigners were quite prepared to let this case slip by. feeling it was only one more to the list, now, alas a long one, you exactly hit off the truth. It is not my point to raise the O question whether the missionaries are right 3 when they say that they do not wish ven- geance to be taken for anything done to 77 them. I only wish to show that there is another side to this question. In China, there are many foreigners besides mis- sionaries. Now, if the Chinese find that they can with impunity take the lives of
