Popular History of Astronomy, just pub. lished by Messrs Black-than in the study. of the heavens. Though it is only, nine years since the third edition of her book appeared, she has found much to add and something to modify. We need hardly say that it maintains the high scientific level and the literary charm of its predecessors. The first of these came out in 1885, when the forward astronomical movement had already begun. It has very largely been due to improvemonts in the means of investigation. During the last dozen years, though the great telescope erect- ed by the late Lord Rosse remains as the ne plus ultre of reflectors, some refractors of exceptional power have bee orected, such as the 28-inch achromatic and the Thompson equatorial at Greenwich, the Victoria telescopo at the Cape, and the Yerkes instrument, with its object-glass over forty inches in diameter. In the Lick and the Boyden- Observatories Americana have the advantage of unrivalled sites for work. A hazy atmosphere, like our own, or a dusty one, seriously impedes the as.. tronomer. Still more notablo advances have followed from the perfecting of the spectroscope. That instrument has span ned almost infinite distances. and has brought as captives sun and stars alike into the physicist's laboratory. It has revealed to him the chemical constitution temper. ature, and movements of those lamps

photography, The chemical plate, as Miss Clerke observes, has two advantages over the human retina: it is sensitive to rays which are utterly powerless to produce any visual effect, and it can accumulate impres sions almost indefinitely, while from the retina they fade after one-tenth part of a Becond. Without the camera the field of work for telescope and spectroscope would have been limited; with it, the astronomer has been able to harvest their fruits for leisurely and repeated study, to determine the constitution of sun and stars, to map. sound, and explore the depths of the sky.

Solar physics have occupied the astrono-. mer for more than half a century, but the last decade has added greatly to his know ledge. In it there have beon four total, eclipses of the sun. The weather in that of 1896 was adverse, and only two groups of observers met with any success. Though it was not very favourable, results were. Vacant secured, while it left nothing to be desired in 1893 and 1898, These eclipses have enabled astronomers to pass from the study of the sun's chromosphere to that of ite corona and the mystery of this strange luminous halo, visible only during eclipses, is being gradually dispelled. Miss Clerke thus sums up the present state of opinion. It is not a volar atmosphere; it does not share the sun's rotation or gravitate on its sur face; ita constituents are in a perpetual state of efflux from and influx to that lum inary, and are almost certainly organised and arranged round it by electro-magnetic action; they are affected by the perionie ebb and flow of its activity, and form nu appendage which must be of inconceivable tenuity, since comets cut their way through. it without experiencing sensible retardation.. Though when Miss Clerke published the third edition of her book, the chemical com position of the sun's photosphere, and even of its chromosphere was fairly well ascer

become familiar enough, for actually present in the atmosphere. In some planetary inatters we are not yet Inuch nearer than we were to certainty; the existence of an intramercurial member of the systoin seein less probable, the at- mospheric constitution of more than one is still dubious, the canals of Mars remain an enigna. But one discovery, though only of an asteriod, may ultimately redeem those bodies from astronomical inutility. -In August, 1898, a plate exposed by a Berlin observer preserved the trail of a rapidly moving star-like object of the eleventh magnitude. Eros, as it was nam ed prove to be unique among asteroids, for its orbit is so circumstanced, that once in ovory sixty.sovon years it comes within fifteen million miles of the earth, and this niay be near, bough, to make it of ex- traordinary value to celestial surveyors.'

But nowhere have the new instruments of research been inore helpful than in the study of the stars. Much, indeed, had been done during the interval since Hug: ings first answered the question Of what are the stars made by announcing the conclusion of his laborious comparison between stellar dark lines and the bright lines emitted by terrestrial substances. That announcement was like the letting out of water. Speedily improvements wero brought about in instrumental methods, and in the last fifteen years of the century the spectra, to quote Miss Clerke's words, began to be taken down wholele-as many as two hundred stars down to the eighth magnitude wero occasionally printed on a single plate with a single exposure." Photography has made it possible to map the Heavons. In the year 1900 the con- clusion of the Durclimasterung' which had been carried on at the Cape of Good Hope Observatory for nearly twenty years, placed at the disposal of astronomers a photographic census of the heavens fuller and aurer than any of earlier date.' It includes between four and five hundred thousand stars, nearly to the tenth mag- nitude, and their positions are trustworthy to about one second of are. A general photo- graphic survey of the heavens has now been undertaken, and the first part of it appeared three years ago.

Kince astronomers found themselves ready

to deal with them, have opened out an al most boundless field. One, the Nova Aurige, discovered by Dr Anderson in February, 1902. was at onco attacked by the new methods of research, but the dis- covery, by the same observer. of the now star in Perseus, in the same month of 101 supplied fresh material to the physical astronomiers. In about a couple of days this star rose from less than the eleventh to the first magnitudo, after which it declined, though irregularly. During this period strange changes took place in the spectrum: these were associated with alterations in colour; attendant nebula were detected, and hints afforded of soine vast catastrophic disturbance. The work is not yet ended; but study of the known stars suggests that in the hottest of them the spectrum is comparatively simple, and the lines differ from those of known sub- stances; then, as the temperature falls, these approach more and more to the lines observed in terrestrial and ordinary solar elements. Such changes have been ob- served in the Nova Persei, so that hore the dwellers on earth may be watching a world in the process of being made.-The Standard.

We hear from Swatow that the Eastern Extension Telegraph Co. has been ap- pronched by the mercantile and shipping community of that port to connect Swałow by cable with Hongkong and Shanghai. At present, the cable northwards touches at Amoy and Foochow, and Swatoŵ has to depend entirely upon the Chinese land wires. These are so liable to interruption that the service can scarcely be regarded as efficient for the needs of this important port, hence the present application to the cable company. It is to be hoped the Company will see its way to accede to the request of Swatow.
