It may prove of interest to some of
your fungi-oating readers to learn that yesterday
I gathered at Woodham Ferris a tino speci-
mon of the meadow mushroom measuring 51in. in circumference and weighing over 3lb. I find that my friend, the eminent fungologist. Dr M. C. Cooke, in his work on British Edible Fungi mentions having heard of some larger, although he himself had no experience of any exceeding 12in/ in diameter.
I presume the recent rains are accountable for such abnormal growth. On the 1st ult., Mr W. Arnold Burgess wrote as follows from Southend-on-Sea :- The moist heat, after the recent hoavy. rains, has produced a great fungoid growth, everywhere. A few days ago a mushroom 45in. in circumference and weighing 21b. 11oz. was found near the Rectory, Brad. woll-on-Son, Essex. There was found in long mowing grass on Foulness Island, Essex, in July, 1888, after much. rain, a huge mushroom 31b. 1oz. in weight and 14in. in diameter. A dend wild rabbit, weighing 4lb., was laid curled up upon the THE Undersigned have been instructed

Horts, a few years ago. It weighed 4lb... and was on view in an hotel for some daye, an account of it appearing in the Bucks Herald at the time. Dr Badham, in his Esculent Fungusos of England,' mentions a horse mushroom 5lb Goz. in weight and .43in. in circumference.
Few countries in Europe are so rich in edi ble funguses as our own, from thirty to forty species abounding in our woods and mend- ows: but such prejudice and ignorance exist as to the properties of so-called 'toad- stools' in England that hundreds of tons of the most nourishing and delicious food is annually allowed to rot apon the ground. M. Roques has styled fungi the manns of the poor,' and as Dr Badham tells as ;-'In France, Germany, and Italy funguses not only constitute for weeks together the sole diet of thousands, but the residue, either fresh, dried, or variously in oil, vinegar, or brine is sold by the poor, and 1962 forms a valuable source of inconie to many who have no other priduce to bring into

A Glasgow telegrain says it is an open LEVER WATCHES
secret amongst Clyde yachtsmen that ar- rangementa are being pushed forward for sending across the Atlantic another challen- It is now final- ger for the America Cup. ly fixed that Mr William Fife, of Fairlie, will design Sir Thomas Lipton's third challenger, and Messrs. Denny and Co., of Dumbarton, will build her.
Laflan's Agency sends the following information from New York :-
According to the New York Sun, pre- parations for the construction of Shamrock III. have been going on for several weeks, all the frames have been bent, and they are now being set up. The work of con- straction is so far advanced that it is con- Aidered cortain that the new challenger will be launched in December.
In 'designing Shamrock III—which, according to Sir Thomas Lipton, will be the third leaf to make a perfect Shamrock '-Mr Fife has received every assistance from Captain Watson. Shamrock III. will be an im- proved Shamrock I., with modifications suggested by Captain Watson's experiments with models in Messrs.Denny's tank. The new challenger will be lightly con- structed, the frames are made of nickel- steel, with a plating of ammadium, a hard smooth alloy of manganese bronze. It is inferred that the liner-plates of aluminium, failure in Shamrock I., which proved will be omitted. It is maid Shamrock I11. will carry fourteen thousand five hundred feet of canvas, according to the New York Yacht Club's measurement. Ratsay will make the sails. Tho steel spars will be of the lightest, and of the most modern standing; running rigging will be used.
Sir Thomas Lipton proposes, as soon as the yacht is fitted out, to try her in the Clyde against Shamrock I., after which ho will take both yachts to the Mediterranean, where they will race in the Spring regattas. From thence Shamrock III. will cross the Atlantic. It is expected she will arrive in New York early in June.
Meanwhile the Captain and crew of Shamrock 1 will come to New York to put Shamrock 11. into commission.
Shamrock II. now lies in the Eriu Basin, and she will be thoroughly overhauled, and her liner-plates removed during the Winter, Shamrock III. will be fitted out immediately on her arrival, and at the end of June both yachts will begin a series of trials at Sandyhook, racing daily. Sir Thomas Lipton is convinced that there cannot be too much time spent in tuning- up, hence the earliness of the preparations. Sir Thomas desires the race shall take place in August, to securo which the challenge for the America Cup must be received not later than October 1.
No details of the meeting called by Com- modore Ledyard, of the New York Yacht Club, have been made public, but it is believed that arrangements were partially made to place the Columbia and the Constitution in readiness to defend the Cup.
Rumour states that a new Syndicate, with Mr Morgan at its bend, will build n third boat. Ever since the last raco Mr Herreshoff has been studying the situation, and has planned a new boat, which he is ready to begin as soon as the order is given. Mr Herreshoff says he is prepared to turn out a yacht faster than any afloat
Mr Cormack, the Secretary of the Now Yacht Club, thinks the challenge may be received any time now.
Many yachtsmen would prefer to have the races sailed later than August, and all express the pleasure they feel that Sir Thomas Lipton is trying again.

THERE is no doubt that dancing in France has abvolutely died out. At one time, there were over. 30 great dancing-halls in Paris and all packed night after night; but the craze died out with the introduction of the cycle.'
Scientific investigations have revealed the true mature and composition of cod iver oil. which have been thoroughly, veritied by experience. No longer is it necessary to force down a dose of nause- ating, repulsive cod liver oil to get its medicinal effects. The extractives-the tonic, curative, re-building part-may be taken separately in a pleasantly palatable form and with far better result. The grease--the oil-is not only useless, but is undesirable and often detrimental.
Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil
is unexcelled as a tonic and reconstructive. It is free from oily matter-devoid of any intimative of cod liver oil, yet is the most effective preparation of the latter ever offer- ed. Just the thing for run down, weaken- ed, puny conditions of the system.

COLLAPSED HOUSES.
Mr C. W. Dickson-Is it a fact that the houses which have recently collapsed ware huilt in accordance with the Building Ordinance in this Colony and were so certi find by the Director of Public Works 2
Mr Chatham replied: Certificates under Section 53 of Ordinance No. 15 of 1889 were issued in raspect of the following buildings, where Collapses occurred: Nos 129 and 131 Des Voeux Road West; No. 45 Praya East and No. 30 Kowloon City

Mr G. W F. Playfair-As in the Colonial Secretary's reply to my question at the last meeting of Council he admitted that there were no regulations on the subject of hold ing enquiries into collapses of the houses, and as section G of Ordinance 17, 1888, only permits the Magistrate to enquiro into cause of death and does not compel him to do so, I beg now to ask if the Government will either introduce a separate Ordinance dealing with the whole question or add further sub-sections to clause 228 of the new Public Health and Building Ordinance making such enquiries compulsory, to be hold immediately after the occurance and giving authority for really heavy fines, and Hot nominal ones, to be inflicted on all con-

In response to representations made last year to the Secretary of State for the Colonics, the services of Mr Osbert Chad wick, the well-known Engineer, and Dr W Simpson, M.D., who has been specially employed in India and South Africa during the epidemics of Plague, were obtained to report upon the Sanitary Condition of Hongkong, especially in relation to Plague, the annual recurrence of which in epidemic form had baffled the efforts of our Medical and Sanitary Officials. Action has already been taken upon Mr Chadwick's exhaus- tive report on the Water Supply and Drainage, as to which the following passage: appears in Professor Simpson's reports.
With reference to Ply and Sowerage they are stupendous works which the Government may well be proud of. Professor Simpson also re- ports that, neither the scarcity of Water nor the system of drainage has anything to do with the plague epidemic, which he at- tributes mainly to its propagation by rats. The joint report of those eminent experts on the question of the Housing of the Population of Hongkong shows that too many houses are crowded on too small a spaco; that the tenement houses are oc cupied by too many people, and that the design of Chinese tenement houses hitherto authorised by law is so faulty as to be in a ations of these two gentlemen have been high degree insanitary. However, whether stated in pounds. or in dollars, the result of the working of the year 1901 is execedingly good. There is a very satisfactory natural increase both in the premium receipts and in the profits quite apart from the nominal increase due to exchange, and there is a balance of $816,000 odd, of which, it is estimated that not more than $116,000 odd will be requir- ed for outstanding liabilities and losses. This leaves $400,000 to deal with, and we recommend that $100,000 of this be placed to Reserve Fund and the balance applied in payment of a dividend of $30 per share as compared with the dividend of $23 per sharo paid last year.
