Play in the final round of the Champion- ship contest at the Singapore Chess Club between Messrs J. B. Elcum and T. R. Miles was still proceeding when last advices came to hand from Singapore. The match is the best of three games, draws not to count. The first game fell to Mr Miles, the second being still unfinished.

The cable chess match between Hong- kong and Singapore resulted, like its predecessor, in a win for Singapore, who won one game, the other being an even draw. I cannot say that I care for con- sultation games at chess, and I have an idea that the Hongkong players could do better. individually than they did collectively. I should like to see a match of two games between our local ch

Mr P. W. Sergeant, and Singapore's host.

The Hongkong Chess Club gains by the return of Mr H. E. Pollock, K.C., A front- rank player and a good sport. We welcome him back as heartily as we congratulated him on his official preferment.

It cannot be said that there is any abso lately best way of opening the game, either

for the strack or for the defence--or that
