The reof is marked on the chart, and the supposition is that the vossol was slightly deflected from her course by a current and carried on to the coral bank, The night was vory dark and nothing could have been seen; but the weather was fine and the sea calm. about three miles off on the port side, sup-

posed to be Gator Island, while another atoll was seen on the starboard side, which was probably Cardiva Island which lies at the South of the entrance of the Channel bearing its name. The Malo atoll, the principal island of the group, could be seen about 10 miles distant and to the left of Gator Island. As soon as the hands had assembled on deck the Captain addressed them, explaining the true state of affairs. The vessel had struck on a sunken reef over which there was about two fathoms of water. Both sides of the reef was deep water. Captain Hadden believed

sea;

The voyagers soon lost sight of the stranded vessel. The natives were then coming to the scene from the various atolls round about in their little canoes, and it was expected that they could be depended upon for any assistance. Captain Hadden had also taken the precau- tion to launch the ship's boats and have them alongside, and his intention, was to remove the rest of the crew and some pro- visions to the atoll hard by, while himself and the second officer remained on board on the chance of signalling any passing vessel if found necessary. The lifeboat was meanwhile sailing steadily towards Colombo and fine weather was experienced on the first day. Tuesday, however, broke nasty, gusts of wind blow the greater part of the day, and to make matters worse it zained heavily off and on, and the men were drenched to the skin with spray and rain- water. Matters became worse at night and about 9-30 o'clock the mast snapped just above the thwarts. The boat now

Next day the weather was again bad and the sail had to be continually reefed and unreefed for fear of the mast being carried away, while the bucket had to be constantly used to bale out the water, which was washed over. About 3 o'clock in the after- noon, Colombo being then about 150 miles distant, a vessel was sighted, and a signal.j being hoisted half an hour later she came up with the boat. She proved to be the German steamer Rudesheimer,' outward- bound, which, after giving the necessary directions and some provisions, continued

He asked them to put out of their minds anything they might have read in the newspapers, reports or anything else, about collapses. Each of these cases must be tried simply and solely on its own merits. In this case, it would not bo necessary for them to go into the question of who built No. 56 or how it was built, whether of good or bad material, except so far as it was necessary to consider these questions when they were considering why the wall fell down. It would be shown that No. 56 First Street was an old house-what they called an old house in Hongkong, not what was called an old house in Europe, whero a building stood for hundreds of years. It was built, so far as they had been able to ascertain from the records in the Government offices, before 1873, and the material, they would find, was of very poor quality-bricks poor, mortar poor, walls badly built and badly bonded, and not such a wall as would be expected to stand very bad weather.
