THE REACTION IN CANTON.

Canton, Supt. 19. The resignation of the able and pro- gressive Superintendent of the College of the Two Kwing is, I am convinced, a sign of the times, and not a good one. A gen- tloman who was lately resident in that College has written me to the following effect: I am sorry to tell you about this school, A great Cantonese conservative name, Liung Ting Fen, now the Woo- chang Prefect of the Hupeh Province and a man of Chang Chih-tung's party, sent a telegram of very bad words to the Super- intendent, who was greatly disappointed to find a Cantonese so full of hatred to the truth, and he accordingly resigned his office, feeling it was a useless task to try and educate then. Ting, an old man of this City, who has no acquaintance with West- ern education and who is known to believe

only in Chinese, has been appointed the successor of the late Superintendent. It is

very pitiful to think that the school will

I hear on good authority, apart from the report in the Chinese newspapers, that the two bands of students from the Two Kwang who are in Japan for the purpose of study and travel have been recalled by telegram.
