INFANT MORTALITY IN
FRANCE.
The following letter was sent to the Standard by its Paris correspondent on the 14th ult. :-
M. Gaston Leroux to-day publishes in the Matin an article on the infant mortality caused by bad and adulterated milk. He quotes statistics of a most painful nature, which would seem to demonstrate beyond doubt that an enormous percentage of the children who die annually in France are literally poisoned by bad milk. This article is illustrated by a map of France, on which the greater or less infant mortality from that cause is indicated by small or large black spots. A glance at it shows that France may be divided into two regions,' one to the north of the Loire, where more than half the children who die succumb to gastritis, where as to the South of the Loire not more than one-
third die from that disease. At Troyes the percentage of the infants carried ofl' by gastric diseases is 69; at Mans it is 63; at Réimes, 64; at Boulogne-sur- Mer, 49; at Amiens, 62; at Lille, 56; at Paris, 36. In the South of France the comparatively few deaths of infants from that, disease is most striking. At Toulouse it is 31 per cent. of the total infantile mortality; at Beziers, 12 per ent.; and at Clermont only 6 per cent.
Explaining the phenomenon of the high rate of infant mortality from gastritis to the North of the Loire compared to that in the South of France, M. Gaston Leroux says it is due to the adulteration in the North of the country, where the making of butter is a great industry, whereas very little butter is made in the South. He considers that it is, morcover, now completely established that to feed chil: dren even on unadulterated milk which has been skimmed of all the cream is. a dangerous and guilty practice. In connection, with the dangers attending. the consumption of milk, not only by infants, but by adult persons, it is interesting to note the following lines contained in Les Principes de Laiterie, written by Doctor Duclaux, Director
¿
of the Pasteur Institute: --
Numerous experiments have shown that milk of cows suffering from tuberculosis contains bacilll of tuber- culosis, not only when the udder is contaminated with tuberculosis, but when it is in reality healthy, and the disense elsewhere. It can be aflirmied to-day that numerous persons suffering from tuberculosis owe their disease to milk, and that to avoid the danger of infection, which is much greater than might be supposed, it is necessary to cease drinking unboiled milk.'
A woman that is well, in perfect health, is rarity. The majority of women have some ailment—some disorder of which to complain. They are weak, all-tired-out,' ⚫broken down,' the roses have vanished from their cheeks, the smile from face, the cheerfulness from the voice. They are peaked, pale and puny. The ruby lips are purplish or blanched, the sparkling eye is dimmed and the bowitching charms of youth are faded. This all due to ill-health. Why women should be so unhealthfu}, space will not permit of discussion bere. But it is a fact. Their systems are debilit- ated, all-run-down and need toning up. The stimulating effects of a tonic and tissue builder are required.
Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil fills the bill and will produce marvellous results in many cases. Stearns Wine restores health and vivacity, builds up the system with new and healthy tissues and banishes the raging, indescribable pains. The headaches, backaches, bearingdown pains, due to female weakness, "disappear under its influence.. It is a most excel· lent tonic and reconstructor. Wholesale from A. S. Watson & Co., Ltd., Hongkong.

THE JOCKEY CLUB AND DISCARDED GRIFFINS.
To the Editor of the 'China Mail.'
Hongkong, September 16. SIE.-Mr Pontifex's somewhat tardy expression of his regant for rules may be real and genuine, enough; his actual attitude towards a public and official an- nouncement made before a drawing is far from being so satisfactory.
Mr Pontifex appears very much hurt, Ho obtrudes himself once more upon public attention in a state bordering on mental distraction. It is a pity, because the public, while appreciating the ingenuous in which he takes it into his con- fidence as regards the private stato of his feeling, is in personal matters absurdly
cold and unsympathetic.—Yours,
GRIFFIN.

THE RECRUDESCENCE OF BOXERISM IN CHIHLI.
The following is an extract of a letter from a Chinese gentleman in Peking who has exceptional opportunities of procuring reliable information of what takes place in that portion of Chibli province. Readers of these Notes' will see from the context that the North is far from settled, that the first murmurings of a coming storm are being heard in the near distance, and that Boxerism is far from being a thing of the past in Chihli. Bozeriem will again be popular movement, more expansive and more firmable desire to oppose, the pin spite of a fueblo to oppose the po pular outburst the chances will be that the Empress Dowager and Manchus at Court will be carried along in the general rush to avenge the insults and contumely that the nation has suffered and is now suffering at the hands of the Barbarians of the West.'
