THE UNIVERISTY BOAT RACE.
A Desperate Struggle, The following description of the Oxford and Cambridge boat race is taken from the Daily Express of April 1
It was closs upon half-past ton won the Oxford crow, as challengere, came aringing along against the infloring tide, and turn ing, dropped down to their sinks bunt. Cambridge, who bad won the toss and chosen the Sarroy side of the river, with its advantage of smoother water, as the gale then biew, sad the inside of the big turn, followed closely. There was a slight delay, for the cross wind made it difficult for the leats to keep their bows straight, Then came the anxious seconds of pause, the shout from the umpire, the pistol shot --and away they go on their long journey The bust-pace courts may be divided in to three sections. The fires contains the long and fairly straight reach from Putney Bridge to Hammersmith; the second, the hugo curvo to the loft that starts before Flammersmith and finally enda in a back turn at Harnes Bridge; the third, the right hand curve from Barnes to the finish.

On Saturday the galo blew down sorosi the river at the start, giving the Carabridge crow the smoother water in the second section it was a dead poser, throwing up miniature waves, through which the Lots thrashed with much spray flying, though Cambridge again had the smoothier course in the last Oxford had a slight sarautage in the state of the water and a great sivan tage in the bend of the river.
Cambridge started the better, and had slight lead in the first few hundred yards They wore rowing thirty-eight strokes. minuto. But Oxford, who wore swinging along in beautiful style, soon caught them up again, and at Coven Stopa had drawn almost lorel. The Caribridge çox hrought. bin boat in as if to gain the protection of the bank, but he somed to change his mind, and can out again, thereby laing a. few feat, But favoured by their station, the Light Bluca again came up, and the ts crews shot through Hummureith Bridge on almost equal terms, the time 7min. 30ses It was going to be a splendid race-that
was certain.
Than came the back-ls-oaking park ist the ranc--the long and woary struggle against The wind and waves. Splashing neither crow could well avoid, but still they showed themselves strong and plucky oars, svingius steadily and keeping the stroke long Gradually, inch by iuch, the Cambridge crew gained their opponents, who in their mero exposed position came in for
the worst of the weather.

And there they stood confronting ench other, the very flower of English and Scottish football. In clean-ent profile, the Englishmon loomed up ahneply in their white shirts and black kitickers on the sombre background.
The Scots filled the vyo less by reason of their delicately-tinted colours, which were overpowered by the dull surroundings.
The Englishinen bat gained the cheied of ends. They had a strong westerly brzo behind them, and quickly they were agen to attack. The players elithered and slid through the mud, while many water splash threw its contents around in spray-like fashion.
