It needs useless to deal editorially with the political situation in the Far East Before the lak is dry news reaches us from Poking or Europa of some change in the game of political chess, completely altering the aspect of the position, and rendering local speculations futile and worthless. A week or two ago, indications pointed to a French descout upon Hainan. cruisers, rendezroused in the neighbour- bood of the island, French troops were mobilised and put upon a war fact ing, French journals openly stated that the annexation of Hainan was immineat,
French
and French officials openly stated that they had been instructed to hold them-1 selves in readiness for such a contingency,
to prepare to take up certain defined

On the other hand in the House of Comincus on the 26th Februscy, the Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. George Carson, stated that France not only had doniod that she had any in- tention of occupying Hainan, but that she did not intend to establish a base of opera-The N. Y. K. a. a. Yamashiro Maru, left tions in these water. How much this | denial was worth is shown in the telegram of the 20th inst, in which it is stated that France demands from China a cooling sta- tion on the Leichow Peninsula. France has made the following demands on China as compensation for the privileges that have been granted to other Powers, and has requested an answer in eight days-
