Those vessels (or, at last, the steancers) do not ascally allow the grass to grow near their keels, and the officers are usually best with very little leisure time to devote to recreation. Still, such difficulties may be overcome; and we would commend the subject to the favoumble notice of the flourishing institution known as the En- gineers' and Shipbuilders' Institute. This society, which is presided over by Mr David Gillies, appears to be the ideal body. for carrying out the proposal now made to successful issue. It is the headquarters of officers of the morcantile marine, and lectures occasionally given in the rooms of the Institute would in the course of time ensure the presence of an efficient expat ent of first aid on nearly every vessel frequenting these waters.
