To those who were in the thick of the fight sixteen years ago, when Governor Hon- neasy sought to upset the foundations of the system of grants-in-aid, in favour of the ultra-clorical party, it will ho plea sant to read Dr Etel's remarks on the an-called soeclarism of the Hongkong Laais of grants-in-aid. He for so that tode which deliberately and winely ignores the queation of religion altogether. Now this is the kernai of the discussion which was so wararly taken up sixteen years ago. The Government, as a government, can have nothing to do with any form of religion whon aiding and supporting education. Results in non-religione subjects only are recognised, although as much religion as the school-menagem please to give may bo taught at the schools. It is curious to note, how-
ever, that the attendance of Chinese at the Grant-in-aid schools is larger than
that at Government schools, notwithstand- ing the fnot that Christianity is taught in the former; but this is explained by the fact that iswtruction is faster and more thorough in the grant-in-aid than in the | Goverment schools. Regarding the de- termination of the Goverment to promote English rather than Chinese education, Dr Eitelsays there is a tendency on the part of school managers to conform as soon as possible to the new policy. A cesire for English education is spreading amongst the Chinoso, and this desire seems to in. crease for political reasons, as well as for. commercial purposes. This desire is now becoming general all over the Empire, and is increasing everywhere. As a result of this desire to learn English, Dr Eitel notes the need that has arisen for the establish- mout of a Training School for nativo jea-
