HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9, 1907,
The Indian and Coylan tua-planters have done much by way of co-operation to help forward their ten trade, and now almost at -the eleventh hour-there-are-wone signs of
similar combination at the China tou porta. A circular has been issuel, which will be found in another column, wherein is shown the various causes which have led to Chis team being relegated to the back. gmund and setting out a plan to re-capture for China teas their long-lost place in the markets of the world. The same qucation has been agitating the minds of the Japen- ese tes trailers. The enviable position secured by Indian and Ceylon teas is just another proof of the efficacy of advertising. The tea traders of China and Japan have at last awakened to this fact. At a recent dinner of the Yokohama Tea Traders' Guild, the keun competition of Indian and Ceylon toas with James tous in the United States of Amarion was discussed.) It was intimated that the Japaneso Len trulers had adopted a scheme of defence, and that the Government and grinted a subsidy of seventy thousa yen per annum for the next seven years to try out the plan. The Chinese and Japaness tes plan. ters when they had the monopoly of the market, not content with the already hand. some propt. diey wore cerning, to further increase tlíeir warningsfovered the standard of the tea by adulteration, and so paved ...1/114 the way for the success of the Indian and 1/1148 Chylon planters. Then the avaricious man- darina squeezed so much from the planter. and trader that it was scarcely worth the trouble to exporters to send tea to the for eign markets at all. The Yokohama Tradera Guld havn porecived the neces nity of giving warnings to beal producer) to upyore their teas, anil shnilar warnings have been given to the Chinago producers. It is maintained by Chinese and Japanese 1611 traders alike that the Indian and Ceylon Ten Planters Associations had taken und ne
