LIFE IN OTHER WORLDS. Professor Ball some time ago wrote an article on the possibility of life existing in other worlds. It was a foregone conclusion that ho should not confidently assert the existance of intelligent hangs outside of this world, because our science as yet has not been able to discover Indisputable signs of them, notwithstanding Mr Lowell'a ob- servations of the canals of bars but science, at any rate, has found that the planets and stars, or suns, are all made of much the same kind of matter es the earth. As houses are not built to go uninhabited, it scems very improbable No many great worlda, mors or leas resembling our ow, should be made to roll idly in empty space,

Few of us, not biassed by earlier viors, can doubt that they were meant to be inhabited, and that a enrtain proportion of them are inhabited by living creatures of one kind or another. M. Jansson, the well-known French astro- nomer, is evidently of this opinion, and he imagines that science may prove it some day. He expects that science aliter a time will lift man above material preoccupations, and mechanical or positive parsdits to taste for clavated poetry and enthusiasm for the beautiful and a reverence for the ideal.

THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY, By the birth of a daughter to the Duke and Duchess of York the number of the Queen'a great grandchildren is increased to thirty. The Queen's family is now an oz- codingly large one, and it in difficult perhaps to realise exactly what is meant by the phrase so often usot, the Queen and all the members of the Royal Family.' Ii nao were to count the Queen and her descend- ants alone, the bare numbers would come out something like this

Total.............. 71 Nothing probably could show mure strongly than these simple figures how far we are removed from the fears which were entertained by statsmen sixty or seventy years ago as to the future of the Royal House. I that respect indeed, no con- toust could be greater than that between the circumstances under which the Queen ascended the throne and those under which sho is now to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. It is said that in the coming Jubilee procession four generations of the Royal Family in the direct line are to be repressuted-the Green, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York and Prince Edward of York. Their ages will be: 78 The Qacon************ The Prince of Wales ... 56 The Duke of York Prince Edward of York ........ 3 Prince Edward of York's birthday, it is interesting to note, will be the day after the Jubilee celebration. He was born on June 23, 1894, It is more than probaolo too that some of the Queen's relatives other than her own dirst descendants will be represented in the Jubiles procesion. There are something like 160 cousins and descendants of cixisins of her Majesty, and if they are counted with the Queen's own children, grandchildren, and great grand- of the Boyal Family increased to not less than 270. It is, however, with the Queen's own descendants that we are now mest directly concerned.

Of the Qucon's sons and daughters, the Empress Frederiek has six childera living, the Prines of Wales four, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg five, the Princess Christian_four, the-Dukopf-Connaught three, and the Princess Henry of Batton bery four while there are also living five children of the lato Princess Ace of Hesse Bad two of the late Duke of Albany, these masing together the thirty-three grand.
