French patriots who imagine that's dalibe- TUESDAY, May 18:-
to attempt is being made to belittlo Dr Yersin's reputed plague cure. In a recent article, our French contemporary stated thal the China Ma reproduced with pleas sure the criticisms by Dr MacCabe Dallas of Dr Yersin's treatment of plague, cossa. in Bombay. 'Avenir does us an injas- tice, and, we vonture to think, does nos do its own intelligence justice, when it puts that construction on our attitude ta Dr Yersin and his plague cure. We in Hongkong are more deeply interest od in the plague than oven the adjacent French colonics, and we are rondy to wel- come any effective remedy for the dinoso, whether it in the discovery of a French man, s German, a Japanese or an English. TASR. It was not because we rejoiced at wy apparent failure of Dr Yersin's curo în Bombay that we reproduced Dr Dallas'scri ticīamswhich were not absolutely condemna tory but only a plea for scientific elucida- tion. We should have thought any criticism likely to lead to greater exactitudo. Would have been welcomed by scientific minds; but perhaps here again we are mistaken. If L'Avenir would road our article carefully it would there see that we disclaim any desire to rob this clever young French savant of the eredit he undoubtedly deserves for his sull-sacrificing, patient researches in the interests of medical science. All honour is due to him for what he has already accomplished, and should his plague care be hailed by the medical world as an un- questiouble remedy for this dread disease, we will be the first to extend to him our unqualified congratulations. No scientist has any reason to cavil over the application of scientião tests to any discovery claim ed by him; and durely, in a case like Dr Yersin's, where the scientist travels about the world seeking to inoculate people with a bacteriological serum, exact know ledge is as necessary in the interesia of humanity as it is in the scionco of the laboratory.
