THE public meeting held yesterday afternoon, to mark the centenary of the London Missionary Society and to ex- prose sympathy with the work of Protes- tent Missions in China, was a remark- able and interesting event in the life of the first of the kind that has ever hean The Hongkong. Yesterday's meeting was hold in this Colony; and, although Mis sions in various forms have never failed to obtain monetary support and quiet, unobtrusive sympathy from the mer- cantile community of Hongkong, this is the first occasion on which the principle. of Missions has been publicly maintained and supported at a public meeting of residents. Old residents who are or quainted with the history of Chiza know full well what Great Britain owes to the early missionaries, Nearly all the early knowledge of the language, and

of the London Missionary Society Professor Legge). Indeed, the history of our intercourse with China for the last fifty years would be sadly incomplete were the influence of the London Missionary men left out of it. But the most hopefal siga shown by the meeting of yos- terday was the combination of all de- nominations of Protestant Missions, who united in deing honour to one of the oldest Mission Societies in the Far East. A unanimity of feeling was dis- played by the representatives of various denominations which appeared to augur good things in the future. It was a pity,

that wo think,

the Roman Catholic Missions could not have seen their way to join in the movement; but as it was, there is no question that the demonstration Froved a community of aims and objects, and a growing sympathy on the part of the community, which must be welcome to everyone who looks forward to the attalutaeot of e-bigher standard of life amongst the Chinese people.
