But while we recognise the effects of a demonstration of a universal patriotism, it would be foolish to suppose that this has been the main factor in preserving the poaca of Europe, in preventing the ill-will and antagonism of jealous Powers from finding sont in active hostility. The most powerful agent that makes for peace nowadays is not our civilisation, not our divorce from blood-thirstiness, not our demonstrations of warlike strength (though all these things tend to peace), not even our religion-our Christianity, it is commerce. It will be a bad day for British commerce when the Empire is compelled to go to war to defend its rights, and her statesmen, knowing the awfulness of the step, will think, not once, nor twice, but many times before they plunge the nation into what cannot be other than a terrible conflict.
