EONGHONG, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1805.
In view of the determined set made by the literati (or rowdies, which is the saia thing) of North China against all classes of Forvigu Missions, the ques- ticn arises, When is Great Britain likely to taka action commensurate to the occasion. This is not the time to Jiscuss whether the presence of the missionaries in China is advisable or in- advisable. Many arguments could be brought forward in favour of their pre- sence, and not the least is that they have almost invariably been the pioneers of commercial intercourse. But, apart altogether from this debatable ques- tin, the position of the missionary must be regarded in this light, he is possessed of clearly defined Treaty rights. Those treaty rights must be maintained, Noon.Meeting of Shareholders of Theotherwise the prestige of the Foreign Green Island Cement Cu, Ld., at the Powers concerned is bound to suffer. Company's Offico.
Now, it may be alleged that it would be unfair be too particular about breaches of Treaty stipulatione, or, too severe, with a Government which his teen of lato brought under a cloud by rival. This eeems to us to be entirely wide of the mark, The war which has just been concluded has nothing what- 2,2
ever to do with the outrages committed upon the Missions up North. And we 2,91 regard it as the bonaden duty. of the British Government to that justice is done in connection Mary with these wanton attacks. Britishers are of opinion that we have been far too quiet and indifferent over the China-Japan settlement of the Shimonoseki Treaty. There may be some hidden and suficient reason for that quiescence. The same excuse or explanation cannot possibly be put for ward in favour of inaction, when our own subjects are assaulted and burnt out of honge and home, and their Some ports property is destroyed. ought to be secured, and a polite message sent to the High Authorities at Peking that these points of vantage will be retained until proper reparation
