HONGKONG, THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1825,
The withdrawal of Captain Hostings from the post of Acting Police Magis trate pires the Government an opportu.... nity of following out the recomienda- tions of the Retrenchment Commission for the reduction of expenditure in the Magistracy. Since Mr ́Wodahouse re- turned from leave there have been always two Magistrates, with, perhaps,. brief intervals, wherean while Mr Wode house was on leave, the whole of the work was performed by Mr A. G. Wise, the present Acting Attorney General. If we may venture to express an opinion the work of the Magistracy was very ably performed by Air Wise, and wa do not remember that any complaints, were made, by the legal fraternity or anyone else, that UBPOCOSSATY delays were incurred in the dis- pose of cases or in the method of treatment or disposal during the period uver which one Magistrate presided at
the Magistracy. This we say without any desire to set up invidious compari- sons, and without any desire to imply anything derogatory to Mr Wodehouse's disposal of the numerous cases with when he has to deal. As a matter of fact, we have an implicit belief that Mr Wedehouse can discharge the whole of the duties appertaining to bis position as Magistrate without any undue phy- sical strain. The findings of the Re- trenchment Commission sre, we think, conclusive on this point. In his evid auce before that Commission, Mr Wise at fret snid that he had no besitation in saying that the work wis not sufficient for two but was top much
for
one; but afterwards, in ARSWCE
