of a strong desire to go to gaol. The Colonial Office did not consider it night that a colony should be disappointed“ in a' matter of this kind, and accordingly an enormous expenditure for the exten sion of gaol accommodation was regard- ed as desirable. Fortunately, however the protestations of those members of the community who had no desire to become inmates of Victoria Gaol, or who have no prospect of ever being in a

hospitable institution, had some effect with the Colonial Oftes. The dimini- tion of pressure on the space of the Go in 1808 was no doubt doe in some measure to a change in the method of dealing with Chine offenders against the laws of the colony. Norertheless the Gaol is to be ezianded, and the cost of the ør- tension will be no trifle. The total number of admissions during 1993 m. 4,010, as compared with 5,040 in the previous year. Inspite of this very satisfactory decrease the Superintendent, in his reporty gays that the provision proposed to be made with repect to yard space is inade quate. This may be so, and if the yard space could be increased without addi- tion to the sum already voted probably. no objection would be offered. But the lank of suficient yard space is quite a minor affliction compared, with some others, of which Mr Lethbridge com- plains. According to his report, a 90351- derable number of the officers under his control cause enough annoyance to make any Gaol Superintendent's life miserable. The conduct of the staff during the | year,” he says, bas, with some sicép- |tions, been most unsatisfactory. Two second" clasą and fifteen- third class
