HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1802,

TEE annual Report of the Po Loung Kuk, which we have just received, is quito a bulky volume; surprisingly bulky; indeed, considering that it is s record of the transactions of an institu tion which the Hon. T H. Whitehead some time aga considered it his painful duty so describe as a Secret Society. It would make too large a demand on the space of a daily newspaper to pub lish completo translation of the contents of these 172 pages, and the Society, very properly, does not con- sider itself called upon to waste ita money in printing an English odinion of the Report for the benefit of people who do not subscribe a cent to

however, will no doubt be interesting to our readers. In the list of subscribers And the amounto subscribed very con vincing evidence is given of the inter est which the Chinese community take in the institution and of the heartiness with which they contribute to its up- port. Atthe top of the list we find two subscribers of $400 cash, two of $300. 20each, one of $250, nine of $200, four. toen of $160, tive of 8130 four of 3.44 $120, and fifty of $100; the smaller 3,52

subscriptions making up a total of 2,778

$20,589.29. Au equally good indica- tion of the work that is done is afford- ed by the particulars given as to the manner of dealing with the total num her of 1005 cases which came under the notice of the Society. At the com- mencement of the year ending on 3rd July last, there were 52 persons under the charge of the Society and the num- ber remaining at the end of the period was 46. It is interesting to learn that of the giris sent to the Society by the Registrar General, and 20 rescued from the slavery of prostitution, forty-seven were married under the auspices of the

were handed over to the charge of the Oi Yak Fong (an institution similar to the Po Leung Kuk, in Canton) to be sent to their homes. The number of men and boys brought under the notice of the Society by the Registrar General was 104, and the same particulars of the manner in which they were dealt with are given as in the case of the girls. There can be no doubt whatever, that all this represents a great deal of pure- ly benevolent work on the part of thoen who have the rangement of this So- .ciety. Moreover it is work which--not 80 mnoh because of the amount of it bat because of the nature of it-could not be successfully accomplished by a Go, vernment department. Indeed, if it were not done by the Po Lenug Kuk it is very unlikely that it would be undertaken at all. If those who wish to see the So- ciety abolished would state that this is unnecessary work, and that the brothel traffic ought not to be interfered with, we could understand their position; but they admit that in doing what it can to stop this traffic the Po Leung Kuk is PLOM, do, do doing a good work. There are no doubt instances in which the efforts made to save women and girls from. the bondage of the brothel are facile, but the fact that in a large number of eases these efforts are successful not only justifies the existence of the Society but gives it a strong claim on the Government and the public for sup porti We have not the slightest doubt that the report of the Commission EVERTON TOFFEE. which has been ingairing into the work- ing of the Society will strengthen rather than weaken this claim and show that the charge of escrocy which bas
