THE
THIS Revice, which was intended to meet the wants of many students of Chinese caused by the discontinuance of Notes and Queries on China and Jupun,' has reached its Eighteenth Volume. The Review discusace the topics which are uppermost in the minds of students of the Far East and about which every intelligent person con nected with China or Japan is dosirous of acquiring trustworthy information. It in- clades many interesting Notes and original Papors on the Arts, Sciences, Elmology, Literaturo,
Folkiore, G, History,
Mythology,
History, Antiquities, and Social Manners and Quatis, etc., etc. of China, Japan, Mongolia, Tibet, and the Far East generally. Recently a new de parture has boon taken, and the Review now gives papere on Trade, Commerce, and Descriptive notes of Travel by well-known writers. It was thought that by extending the scope of the Review in this direction, the Magazine would be mademore generally Useful.
The Review department receives special attention, and endeavours are made to present à careful and concise record of present Literature on China etc., and to give crítiques embodying sketches of the Most recent works on such topics. Authors and Publishers are requested to forward works to Editor, China Bein, are of China Mail Office.
The Notes and Queries are still continued and form an important manns of obtaining from and diffusing among students know- ledge on obscura points.
The Correspondents' column also affords farther and greater facilities for the inter- change of views and discussion of various topics
Original contributions in Chinese, Latin, or way of the Modern Languages are re- coived. The papers are contributed by the members of the various Consular, the Ita- perial Customs, end Hongkong Services, and also by the Missionary bedias amongst whom a high degree of Chinese scholarship is assiduously cultivated. Amongst the are Dr. Chalmera, regular contributors Eitol, Bretschneider, and Hirth, Professor Legge, and Messrs Balfour, Watters, Stent, Phillips, Maalutyrs, Groot, Jamieson Faber, Kopsch, Parker, Playisir, Giles, Piton, and Taylor, all well-known names, indicative of sound scholarship and thorough mastery of their subject.
