The attitude of Longkong is not quite the same as that of Singapore and Ceylon, as it does not object to pay the increased grant of £2,000 demanded when the promised increase to the garrison has been effected; but common ground with those colonies will probably be found in irrita tion at the exaction of money by the Home Government in disregard of the wish of their representatives, and in the apprehen- sion excited by the prospect held out of further increase (which may, of course,

Nor is this feeling likely to be teasoned in tho meantime by the disclosure made at the menting of the Legislative Council on Apr 30, that the Governor had actually paid the military over the £20,000 in question cheat on his own warrant, before the ques- tion of the re-vote had heas brought before the Connell. Hongkong, 5th July, 1800,-
The barn. I may say, wers hot new when first laid fires in Hongkong, but were in very good condition. Having replaced a away, 1.90 p.m. raised steam, and left Danton at 4.43 pm, bat owing to a deal of junk trafo on the river, did not go full apucă till e39 pm-continue working fires to instructions received from Mr Morris, and kept fairly good steam for over ous hour, engines making 126 revolutions per minute. The steam then commenced to fall, and apou zaming the fires I found they had become very heary and almost choked, the ash being unable to get away, mwing to the narrow spaced bars in use. I than suggested to Mr Morrie that a light rake-ought to be used.
And in doing so I found that this was not only beneficial but quite necessary, By working the rake lightly, and then giving a thin layer of coal, kupt the firse in goed condition and produced a beautiful bright, dame. At 11.30 pm, the 15 tous ware consumed, consequently I finished the passage with Mike dust, arriving in Hong. kong 1.30 am.
After cleaning fires Foramined the new bars put in at Canton, and found that a number of them were so badly hurned that they were totally decless.
But there still remains another very im- partani poing to be considered, which pro bably longer experience in burning the above coal might prove to be kapot injurious, vis, burning the ouds of tubes, and the shis of stays and abay is in the combustion chambers.
Had the coals lasted till dur arrival in Hongkong, I would have been able to have given a more correct statement au to what the difference in consumption would be in being this soul, giving the same I have the honour to report to you the results, compared with Mike dast..
But as near as I can calculate, there is a result obtained from the Hongay Co.'saying of from 5 to 6 per cent, in the Ton- coals, which ware used in our furnaces in cox). The sah produced is from 16 to during the hat trip of this steamer from 17 per cont. But this might be reduced if Haiphong to Bongkang

The fire bars tend in this case are very light, spacea betroen cash being of an indlt.
About 40 tons of this goal were pat on board by direction of the Co.'s General Manager, M. Bavior Chanffour, to be sub- mitted to careful trial by me.
It is a brilliant oual, with easy lines of cleavage, and black like Kutcastle coal It produces a rather long flame, while the draught is fairly active, sad, judging from the absence of the usual oulour appearances, containa very little pyritos.
It produces scarcely any suoso, does not chose the tubas, nor does the very small amount of clinker produced adhere to the fire bara.
It has a very great calorific value, is no conpact and arm that it will stand a lot of bendling, and considering its price, could be must advantageously used in hien of the two-thirds of Cardiff coni which is used in the mixture employed in most of the com- pay's steamera

I am of opinion that a much heavier bar with spaces apart, Bay from 1g inish to 1 inch, would give much better results and save the bar greatly.
When burning coal alone there is no clinker, but abaq burning ash unduhtedly there is a clinker formed. It is also quito necessary to have an extra od draught to make this coal a success.
With a good draught and suitable bars, I havo not the slightest hesitation in saying that it is a good steaing oual, I am, dear
