On the Midland Railway, twenty-three miles.routh of Carlisle, there is a little station called Calgaith. Hera there is n signal-box in which. Signahran Andrew 81,

As is Agge la to be found on duty daily. tho onze with ait other rigoal boxes, this one contains the lever and tile usual com- plicated electric and mechanical contrivances for making and receiving signale. Mr Agge. is on duty nearly every day, and takes ti luncheone without leaving his post. He is a sturdy man of thirty-fivo, in good health, and no complaint has ever been made against him by the public; yet an incident occurred a few rears ago that carse duar deprising him of his position and his life, For some time he had not felt woll, the worst and most dangerous phase of his in- dieposition being a kind of giddiness that ns.he would suite

him

ad unexpectedly described it,'est everything to twisting round and round, and told tim frankly that it was a symptom of a still morn radical complaint brought on by too much coufinement, and by his irregular hobile of eating and sleeping, and that he had better abanden his work for a while, and try a change of

doctor

But this was casier said than done. He had a family to support, and couldn't afford the luxury of a vacation. He knew no other business, and could not risk the loss of his place. His work was always docs, however, no matter how he felt. But it ie. only fair to say he had any auxious bours over it. His ailment, which he bad dis covered to be indigestion and dyspepsia, now set up more slamming symptoms. A physician at Appleby assured Aggo that there was serious trouble with his kidneys and bladder. It is, said the dostor to the Sigualman, the result of the condition of your digestion. Your blood is poisoned by your stomach, and every orgau of the body is crippled by it."

This ·WAS A. miserable callook for Agge, who went back to Calgaith with small work. He took bold, courage for his wai though, as well as he could, and kept it up until one morning several weeks afterwards. He was in the box as usual when of sudden a sharp pain shot through him as though he Flo kuife. had been stabbed with tumbled down on the locker in the signal- bax, and lay there all the frenosa in aonta distress and agony. For the time his work was a secondary consideration. Unable to remain in that position any louger, he laid down and rulled on the door. The pain in his hips and hack was so intense that he knives, compared it to being out with dail and pinreed with hot irons. Agge was nobody. alone when the attack came, and as except railway offcials are allowed in the signal boxes, it was some time before bis plight was discovered. Finally, however, the station-master earce in, the neighbours were shamoned, and the suffering man was put into a trap and taken to his abuse, half a mile away. There he was ill for

weeks, part of the time unconscious. Was the phycis bad avowedly got to the end of their resources it was agroed the Signalma's end was only a matter of a very little time.

This

was

that

the situation when a singular thing happened. Two or three years before, while Agge was feeling the earlier aymptoms of he disorder, ho had taken a medicine that helped him getting better, he put the bottle asido, still half fall, and forgot it altogether.

We may mention that the medicine was the well-known preparation, Mother Seigel's Ourative Sprop, although to advertise the article is not the chief motive for this little narrative.
