--THË PRAX WATER SUPPLY,

Although it would no doubt be CaRy to collect the water up there, on the plan suggested by Mesra Danby and Leigh, thero would be no difficulty in making a reservoir, still I think anch a system open to a tery considerable objection, namely that the reservoir would be close to a num- bor of houses. On the Fever (ommission the Rokfulam re- objections were mined to BurFoir as a source of supply on account of the number of houses in the drainage area. If these objections had any voight they would have still greater weight in this case against making a reservoir under those houses, Another objection is that it would be a very small pond, bofors the view of everyone, and if the water looked at all there would sure to bo an outery, I have therefore come to the conclusion that pumping is the host method to adopt. The intention is to do this by incans of the water which will be- tho
power of supplied from the same reservoir. There je A surplus ver after the duc supply of the lawor district, and it is proposed to utilise this to miso a cactain proportion of the water to the Peak, which of course will involva no expenditure, except a man to look after the machinery; but for tho time being, until all is finished in town, it is intended to put up a steam-engine, and this will always be required as a stand-by. The present estimats includes the cost of the steam engine for that purpose. The steam-ungine will he orected on the Bonham. Road, not far from the site proposed for the new gaol, and the water will be anzt up to the Penk in wrought iron pipes of rall diameter. It is proposed to provids in the first instance pumping tunchinery 24,000 gallons and pipes for the raising per day. By working night and day that amount can be doubled. It will only be necessary to alter this portion of the chinery to double or treble the supply as occasion may require. The estimate, therefore, includes the steam-engine and the pumps. Mr Chadwick said he thought so. With a fall supply of water to the house, very little would be required for flushing. He had made the calculation on Mr Leigh's estimata
of the population, which was a very liberal basis, providing for about dou- ble the population at prosent at the Peak.
Mr MacEwon-When will this work be commenced
Mr Chadwick-As soon as the money is voted, I suppose. As far as I am con- cerned, as soon as over the pipes arcive the worle can go on. I believe the eagius has been ordered.
The Chairman-I think there has been an order given for an engine.

Mr Chadwick-It depends on the state of the market at home; this is rather a large order. If we have no delays in got ting the pipes, although the whole may not be finished, we might have a supply by the commencement of next winter, cortainly I think by the end of the year.
